OK This is a new problem for me. I just installed Illustrator CS 2 on my PC. I have a dual monitor setup and didn’t have any problems with Illustrator CS. The problem I am having now is when I go to the File Open Menu or the File Save Menu, the Open or Save dialog boxes don’t pop up and I can’t open or save the files. The active window does grey out but the dialog box is no where to be found. If I hit the ESC key I can go back to the window I was working on but I can’t save it. Has any one here had this problem? Anyone got a solution for me?

Thanks All

Mark

Did you activate CS2 with Adobe?

Sorry, I'm running CS2 on a PC using Windows XP.

It still requires activation - mac or pc.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not sure what you meen by it still requires activation. Illustrator was installed when I upgraded from CS1 to CS2 and all the other CS2 programs are working properly. Is there an activation dialog box I am missing? Thanks for the help!

No. If you activated creative suite, which you did since the other apps work, you activated AI.

The single biggest cause of adobe apps performing badly is corrupted preferences. I work on Mac so am not sure of what Windows calls preferences, though I think it's called "aiprefs". You might try searching AI help for "preferences" and see if it has anything about deleteing prefs in Windows. When deleted, any app creates new prefs when relaunched.

Thanks for all the info jmgalvin, I will try and find and delete the preferences and see if that helps. I was going to try this before I posted the original post, but I couldn't find the Illustrator prefs. I remember the good old days with my Mac! The prefs were much easier to find. I'll let you know if that works.

Thanks nicksims, I found the prefs and deleated them. Unfortunately this didn't solve my problem. I might have to try and reinstall the program.

Before you reinstall, make sure to disable any antivirus and trash the prefs. AI sometimes does not install correctly with AV on and a new install does not wipe any corrupted prefs if the exist.

I have the same problem with Windows and my dual monitor while running Adobe InDesign or Illustator, but the problem comes and goes. Same holds true if I try to distill a PDF. You can save it and it usually saves in your documents folder or the last folder you were in. I use one monitor to find the file, double click and I can at least work on the thing.

I've activated it, tranferred it on and off the computer, hard shut downs, and almost everything short of throwing the entire thing out the window. If anyone has another solution...please please post it. Thx. HBF

On Windows, if you create a new user account, it will fix it - this would also be worth trying on the Mac too.

You'd probably need to make a few changes in the registry to re-center it without a new account.

Found this to work...
CTRL-O (to open a document)
ALT-Spacebar
in the corner you will get the MOVE/CLOSE menu
Select MOVE
USe your arrow keys to move the pop-up/ "open" window.

Everytime I do this, my open window was somewhere off my left screen and is HUGE. once you see a corner, use the mouse to resize. This should work until you shut down.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help out. The only thing that worked was reinstalling Illustrator. Now everything seems to be working fine.

Incase anyone else has this problem in future on Mac on Win.

Delete the following file to fix this under Windows.

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Adobe\Workflow\settings.xml

Delete the following file to fix this under Mac OS.

user name > library > preferences > adobe > workflow > settings.xml
