Illustrator CS1 crashing on Dell Latitude d820s

Hello, Im posting because I've ran into a pickle here and no amount of googling and searching is leading me anywhere.

We have multiple users running CS (1) on identical dell latitude 820 laptops (xp pro sp2). We use novell client 4.9 and the cs is installed locally. The dell laptops have nvidia quadro 120nvs cards with the newest drivers.

Intermittently we will recieve helpdesk requests from users reporting sporadic crashes (Illustrator crashing). This seems to happen from normal use and not a specific action.

If anyone has ran into this issue or even has a hunch, feel free to respond.

The most common problem with Adobe apps behaving badly is corrupted preferences file. In such a case the app should be quit, the preferences trashed and the app relaunched.

We use macs so don't know where windows keeps those prefs, but I beleive they are called "aiprefs" in windows. You can search for that and trash it. A new prefs file will be automatically created on launch of AI.

Thank you for your response but the issue continues unabated. with a new install it still crashes, I am reasonably sure that this is a hardware conflict or incompatibility issue and I was hoping anyone out here had dealt with it.
