Client sent me an Illus 7 file, presumably an .eps. with fonts outlined.
In the text of the email it is gobbly-goop (see exhibit 1 below for sample)
followed by an attachment box allowing either viewing file or downloading file.
In viewing file, it is gobbly-goop again (see exhibit 2).
And when opening downloaded file, while in Illust
it is an unknown format and cannot parse.
What is a graphic artist to do? Woe is me.

Instruct your client to .zip or stuff the file before he/she sends it to you. You can also try saving the attachment as a .ai file and opening it through AI's file menu. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

Thanks you for the advice. The zip file worked marvelously.

In Exhibit 1 you are seeing how the file actually looks: raw PostScript code. You can open this using Illustrator, and resave with preview, afterwhich you should be able to place it in layout programs, etc. Exhibit 2 looks as if it might be compressed (possibly Stuffit) format; you should try an decompressing utility, then try to open it with Illustrator.
