Hello, I hope someone can help me. A year ago I purchased an HP Pavilion 6740c (Win 98 SE) with a Mitsui CR-4804TE, and EasyCDCreator (Roxio). Every time I try to burn a CD I get an "illegal request" error: 0x8053005. I cannot even format anything. I have tried 2 brands of media (TDK and GQ) with the same result. I have also tried Nero, and that didnt work either. HELP! HP customer care tech svc could not solve this problem. Any insights greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Pardon my questions (just the tech support background in me). You say you purchased the computer about a year ago with the CD writer....are you saying it never worked or it just started failing with this error?

It does make a difference as far as the troubleshooting steps go. Also, is the burner an internal IDE drive? Was it factory installed? Does it work as a normal CD drive? What other IDE/SCSI drives are in the system.

A couple suggestions:

Sometimes an already present CD-ROM cannot support the much faster data transfer rates produced by more recent coexisting ATAPI EIDE or SCSI-2 drives. You may need to upgrade your CD-ROM drive or its controller to bring it up to digital audio extraction capability.

Also, the source drive and the burner should not sit on the same controller channel. If you have it that way, put them on separate controller channels.

Hope this might help.

Thanks for the responses. Here are answres to your questions:

>You say you purchased the computer about a year ago with the CD writer....are you saying it never worked or it just started failing with this error?

I never tried using it before now.

>Also, is the burner an internal IDE drive? Was it factory installed?

It is an internal drive that was factory installed.

>Does it work as a normal CD drive?
It plays music CDs perfectly and reads software from CD-ROM disks with no problem.

>What other IDE/SCSI drives are in the system.
I dont know what these terms mean. I have very few other peripherals: a printer, a mic, speakers, that's it. The commputer has a built-in floppy (A:) drive in addition to the hard (C:) drive.

Thanks again for your help.

Shame on HP support!!

You may want to try some of the steps listed at the link below:

However, I would think the problem would not be specific to Roxio since it is failing in Nero as well.

One step in the Roxio troubleshooting guide that may be good to try is to disable the use of DMA on the CD-R/RW drive. Follow the directions from Roxio on how to do this.

Outside of that, I would guess the problem to be at a hardware or system level. Maybe some OS files are corrupted or missing or incorrect versions. Your best bet there would be to remove all burning software..go to Microsoft update Website and install any critical updates it recommends and then reinstall one, not both, of the burning software packages and try again.

You can also see if there is any firmware update for the CD-R/RW drive -

Kudos, dxd! You get a star. JohnnyCav, you can get quite an education throug the site dxd provided and maybe even find some answers for yourself. In fact, you can back up a couple pages to

and start at the beginning. You should also get some insight into what those components are, as you asked me. Frankly, it is easier to point the way than to write it all out. Forgive me for my laziness--runs in the family, I guess. |-I
