I have uninstalled/reinstalled tcp/ip and dial up adapter in network control panel.
uninstalled/reinstalled dial up networking

Assuming your connection is still live it could be damaged entries for winsock.
If your Winsock has been damaged by newdotnet or webhancer there is a neat free utility called whndnfix.zip (sockfix.exe) I think from lavasoft that should repair it. I have only just found it and havent tried it yet.
Another called LSPfix at Also some registry imports from the Cable Guy which should do the same thing (I followed a link from
I have had to do this manually in the past. The way I have done this is to delete all network components including dial-up adapter. Then go into the registry and delete HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\Winsock and Winsock2.
Then go back and reinstall all your networking components again. Crude but it works for me.

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

I was able to get connected at my house, but couldnt browse. I have to assume and I mean assume because I know close to nothing when it comes to modems. I was able to connect and at my house I dont have DSL. I just connected with a regular old dialer in dial up networking.

I tried to repair winsocks
Reinstalled Win98SE over itself
renamed and extracted all the TCP/IP files

Still no browse

I told my friend it may be due to the fact that you have a DSL modem as opposed to a regualr 56k modem? I am not sure on this.

Now the box is back at my friends house and he now cant connect at all???!!! #%%#@

He has been with the tech from SBC but they have been no help at all. They are going through a line filter like they always have.

1)Maybe the line filter is bad
2)DSL modem??

Any thoughts. I dont want to give up on this. I must know why and progress in my knowledge. Thanks

If you can dial up through the normal modem it implies that all the Winsock / TCP/IP is working OK, and that it is specific to the ADSL.

Is the DSL modem connected using a network card or a USB port?. If it is through a network card try removing it in the control panel -> system -> device manager and reinstalling it (make sure you have the driver disk handy).
You could even change the slot it is in.

I have had one instance of a USB DSL modem which would not install (On an old IBM Pentium 2 I think). I even reinstalled the whole OS to eliminate any software problems. I installed a network card and it was running in 5 minutes (fortunately it had both connect options on the modem)

Beyond this it must be either a configuration problem or a problem with the phone line. Make sure you dont have too many devices (ie phones/faxes) using the same line - in fact remove all of the while you are troubleshooting. If you exceed the line capacity DSL wont work (usually about 4 phones). Also try taking out the filter while troubleshooting (keep it simple) - the filter just improves phone call quality.
Finally could the modem itself be faulty? Maybe the company could exchange your unit.

DSL is connected using a network card.

I did try removing the card throught the network panel. I aplogize for not saying that before.

I have suggeseted replacing the modem. That is why I havent got back sooner to you guys. I was awaiting the arrival of the modem.

I will let you know. Thanks for your patience.
