I have an issue with the IIS service on my Windows 2003 Standard Server. The Service provides an intranet Website for the LAN. All of a sudden it stopped working.

I have tried restarting the website but it states that it is in use by another process. Checking Task manager revealed no likely candidates. OOH I rebooted the server, with no clients attached the service did not start even though it is set to automatic. attempts to restart brought the same message.

I have checked DNS and that is fine, there is nothing relevant in the event logs.

Any ideas?

sounds like you have two websites, both set to use port 80 without specifing host headers, i could be wrong tho

Thanks for that, I will check, I cannot see what all the fuss is about the port 80 that is the std port for http so if you have an alias for a website in DNS (as there is) it should work. Perhaps I am now understanding why Unix/Linux is the preferred platform of choice for websites.

So I checked all the settings made sure the alias was in DNS and deleted and recreated the web site, recycled apps, checked permissions.

I still cannot restart this service, it comes up with the message unable to complete operation as object is in use by another process"

Any ideas how to find this other process. Task manager is useless and no other tool seems to help. Or do I take a PC put Linux and apache on it and be damned

im still convinced you have more than one site setup, and are both using port 80 without specifiying host headers!!!

Check ur IIS admin, see how many sites under the "websites" bit and disable all but the one u want
