This is my first foray into setting up FTP through IIS (ive always used filezilla under windows, or wuftp under linux), and i'd like to limit access of this FTP site to only specific users.

For instance, we have around 30+ people with usernames on our server, and they access their files over SMB...However, I only want 1 or 2 of these people to have access to the FTP site we're now setting up.

Is this unreasonable/unfeasible through IIS? Should I look into setting up alternate FTP software?

ah, i guess i needed to set permissions for the home directory, when I was expecting an 'allow/deny' area within the mmc. thanks reynolwi!

i've another issue now though...both locally and remotely, i can connect, but during login I recieve the error "530 User cannot log in, home directory inaccessible".

I've searched MS' website and found this page, which only tells me what I already know.

I know the folder exists and has the correct permissions for the given user, and i've pointed the ftp at the right folder giving them read permissions...

Am I missing something obvious?

in the security settings tab on that ftp sites properties page i know the default operating group is administrators i do believe. make sure that user is in an operating group thats listed. that may cause a problem but i dont remember. you should be able to add groups to that list and you can create a new group for those users you want to be able to access ftp and add that group to the operating groups.

Unless someone else has any insite that could be the only other thing that could cause a problem because it looks like you have everything else set right.

in the permissions for the ftp site (right-click > Permissions), i have both the administrators group and a username specifically for this site. The administrators group has all (inherited) permissions, and the single user has explicitly granted 'Read & Execute', 'List Folder Contents' and 'Read' permissions. It gives me the same errors even when I log in under an admin account.

within the actual site properties, there is a Security Accounts tab which it seems is only for anonymous access, and a Directory Security tab, which allows to grant or deny access based on IP (which doesnt help me).

I just had the exact same problem on a 2003 IIS FTP server. In the end it was fixed by uninstalling IIS and reinstalling.

To setup user restrictions, take off allow anonymous access. Setup your user/s in local user management or AD. And then under the default website create virtual directories for each user, the name of these needs to be the same as the user name.

Ed.
