I have a most likely very simple question about setting up DNS to work properly with my self hosted site.

My setup
-I have a registrar whom I purchased a domain from. The DNS settings currently have an A, and an MX record pointing to my IP address.
-My router forwards port 80 to the server running IIS which is also a backup DC. I also have another server running AD and DNS. This server has a forward lookup zone created for example.com. The records here are a CNAME record created for to points to the name of the IIS server (IIS.ADdomain.local)
-IIS is set up with a site of the same name. The host header values to read is both and example.com on port 80.

My problem
My site will not access when you try to browse to it using but only when just typing example.com

If considered a subdomain, do I need to create a record with my registrar pointing my IP address?
How do I get this to work properly?

Thanks in advance for any help at all with this
