I want to setup my first IIS 4 server.
I've downloaded NT 4 Option pack.
Questions
What is the best way to install product and not have inetpub folder on system or boot partitions?

Why are you putting yourself through the pain of learning and dealing with IIS4 when there are less than 90 days before IIS4 / NT4 is scheduled to be pulled off the retail shelves? If you are just starting to get your feet wet with IIS, I would suggest looking into W2K/IIS5 or better yet, go to and request a one year trial of the RC1 windows .NET server enterprise with IIS. If you are learning something new, you may as well consider the current products.

No offense intended...but there are so many features that are available on IIS5+ (As well as security considerations) that spending time on IIS4 may not be the best use of your valuable time.

Hope this helps

I hear what you are saying and you are probably right.
But I work for the City Government where every move envolves hoops to jump through and red tape to cut through. We are only allowed to use products and platforms that are tested and approved by the City. We can't just put any platform on our network that may affect others! We have to test new things for ever. We've been testing Win2000 for over a year already. I'll probably be rolling Win 2000 server when .NET server is avavilable. I have to use the tools that I have available. The server is just for internal use so security is not too much of concern. Thanks for your input MSClusterGuy.

DBall63,

I host my sites (development) on seperate drives / partitions other than the default C:\. To me just it makes good sence from a management standpoint to seperate the "Data" from the "Programs". I can't begin to count the hours it saved me in simplfying my backups and restores.

Despite this, I have not yet found a simple way to move the INETPUB folder off of the C: Drive. Sometime in the future, I would like to migrate everything to a new server running Win 2003 or .NET. When I do, I don't want to have to manually reconfigure all the sites and settings. My time is too valuable to me.

I am presently using Windows 2000 / IIS 5. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

Thanks in advance,

Graham
