Are iframes harmful for SEO? Say I have my parent page and 5 "iframe pages" - I want all of the iframe pages to be indexed by search engines and they all have links from the main parent page (also have some js to ensure that they don't load outside the framset). Will they all get indexed OK? I presume when spiders come to your site, they don't just stop at the first link the find and spider from there, that they actually spider through all the links?

the crawlers will find and visit the pages referenced in the src="..." attribute.

SE crawlers/spiders don't actually crawl links in the way you are thinking.
The crawler grabs the source code and sends it back to the datacentre, other software agents then look for links in that source and add them to the crawl schedule.

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Oh rite, cool ... I didn't know that. So so long as there's a link somewhere to each page either in the parent frame or in an iframe then they'll get indexed (assuming there's a link to my site in the first place obviously).

Thanks

Sorry, just one other question. So say there's a link to mysite.com and mysite.com has 5 links all of which link to somewhere within the site. The first time my site gets indexed it will be from the external link - so only the home page (assuming that's where the external link points to) will get indexed. Then later on, after the links from that page have been crawled, the rest of my site will get indexed - is that correct?

That makes sense ... also helps answer any question I wondered about.

Thanks again

The iframed pages may get indexed, but the text on those pages does not "help or harm" you for ranking the page the iframes are located in. Each page is ranked on their own not collectively in a framed page.

If you want the framed page to "help" the page it is located in, I would use a scrolling div rather than the iframe to get the same effect. This places the content within the main page that was holding the iframes.

Iframes are used by some to possibly "hide" from search engines questionable affiliate links.

No the parent page was just for presentational purposes - I was just afraid that using iframes for the "main content" as it were may reduce my search engine ranking (even though there will be links from the parent page to each of the iframe pages). But thanks for the post all the same. I'm pretty new to SEO so this is quiet a steep learning curve for me right now.
