Hi all,
I monitor the ifInDiscards counter of my cisco switch. This counter is occasionally incremented. I saw this counter is incremeted when there isn't enough space in the buffer.

How can i view and resolve this problem?

Thx a lot
Best regards,
Olivier

Buffer drops are a normal part of switching - your only response would be to upgrade the switch to one capable of higher throughput.

What kind of switch is it?

formation uptime is 1 year, 10 weeks, 23 hours, 56 minutes
System returned to ROM by power-on
System image file is "flash:c2900XL-c3h2s-mz-120.5-XU.bin"

s of memory.
Processor board ID 0x0D, with hardware revision 0x01
Last reset from power-on

Processor is running Enterprise Edition Software
Cluster command switch capable
Cluster member switch capable
12 FastEthernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

32K bytes of flash-simulated non-volatile configuration memory.
Base ethernet MAC Address: 00:02:4B:67:E0:C0
Configuration register is 0xF

It's an old switch, not critical.

So does this counter says to us that we must upgrade our devices?

Unless they are incrementing all the time and rapidly don't worry about it .

Yes, a newer switch would have a faster backplane and bigger buffers, meaning less chance of having buffer drops.
