my test rig pc has blue screened. It is totally nudgered and i am getting a new one which will involve rebuilding the lot. Downloading all the cd's again. Blah blah.

Could have been me.
Always instructing the customers to make backups from Client PC and Servers. But our testenvironment has never been backupped as well.
If you backing up isn't your thing it might help using a raidcontroller and another harddisk.
Then you would be more protected against dataloss in the even of a HDfailure. But it wouldn't help for a bluescreen of death.
