We have Verizon DSL in Pennsylvania. We're trying to use MS Outlook to send messages from other domains: ie.
From: sfschatz@ephilanthropy.org
To: anyuser@anydomain
However, I'm told that we can't "brand" emails thru the Verizon server, that we must use "From" our Verizon-assigned email account.
Is there any way around this?

That was a step Verizon took to prevent spammers from relaying mail through their servers. It didn't always work and now they have changed their server so that they require authentication. This is tighter security but has resulted in changing the situation so you can "brand" your emails now.

I couldn't get the specifics off the verizon website but it shouldn't be a problem to send from another address. If their servers do require authentication, simply go into your mail settings for your "@ephilanthropy.org" account.
There select "Server Requires authentication" and click on "settings".
Here select "Log on Using" and enter your verizon account information.

Generally you'll get a better response if you open a new thread for your question rather than tacking on to an existing thread.
I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. I take it you have two issues:
1. Your DSL modem will not connect until your 56K modem is plugged in (turned on?)
2. Your DSL modem disconnects when you use the phone.
Is that correct?
You will need to provide more specific information about computer configuration, OS, DSL modem type, 56K modem type, etc. In the meantime, take a look here
This may be of some assistance in the disconnects. There is a lot of helpful information there also.

I have a question regarding connection a Verizon Dynamic ADSL circuit to a Cisco 2611xm router, bypassing the Westell modem. I can't make contact with Verizon. I had a similar problem on another ADSL line, and it was fixed when Verizon moved my circuit to a different router.
Is there something in the way Verizon provisions dynamic ADSL that doesn't enable me to connect with a Cisco router?
I know the router is good because it is the same router I used on the circuit that Verizon fixed.

I am having problems the last week with outgoing email. The Verizon Techs I have spoken to have suggested one change in my account, to remove on the outgoing server authentication line the @bellatlantic.net information.
I have tested, online, the web-based services, the outgoing email fails.
Currently the Verizon techs want me to enter my secure username and password on an unsecured, non-certificate bearing third-party email site. I am refusing.
If my outgoing email fails through the Verizon SMTP servers, if it fails outgoing on the Verizon Web-based servers, then it seems outrageous that I should have to enter my most secure username and password access to my Verizon account information to a non-Verizon non-secured site.
The newest informtion I have received from Sean, was that Verizon DSL requires MTU settings far below 1492 for DSL service. He was recommending setting the MTU to the low 1000 range. I explained that it was not a VPN connection, and he said that Verizon required an MTU of no greater than 1024, and that VPN would make no difference in the VPN setting of my connection.
If you could have someone advise further as to my problem that knows slightly more about MTU under ADSL, something more about VPN (even though I am not using it) and a little more about SSL changes on the SMTP servers at Verizon I would appreciate it.

is this a pure webmail - you go to a website, type in the email using your web browser, and click a send button?
and does ALL your email fail?

standard email uses SMTP, but webmail typically uses a "form: submit" method using HTTP.
can you post using any other forms on the web? as you can post to tek-tips I'm assuming you can!

It seemed to get crazy as I was asked to test things.
I sent email to myself through OE, it failed.
They sent email to me, it worked.
I tried their web-based email client and sent email to me,
it failed.

The guy was insistant that I use a mail redirector web site and enter all my account information to create a new account, and I refused.
He then said it was a MTU problem. It told him that it was not. He told me unless I would sign for the email redirector to test they could not help me further.

I have only had the outgoing problem for a week, my gut tells me this is part of the transfer of old Bell Atlantic acounts to all-Verizon servers, and yet I have this guy under remote control checking all of my settings, pinging, sending me email, etc. and when I balk at registering for a remailer account tells me that it is an MTU problem and because I have a router.
Double sheeesh.

I got it. It just took with fooling around with the username setting.
I had for the last 5 years:
MYUSERNAME@BELLATLANTIC.NET
And the outgoing email had:
MYUSERNAME@BELLATLANTIC.NET
With an authentication requirement, and the addition to use all incoming email settings.
What finally worked for me was:
POP3:
MYUSERNAME@VERIZON.NET
And for SMTP,
MYUSERNAME
With authentication, and the use of default incoming settings.
Sheesh. Now why could not Verizon tell me that?

The changes being made to incorporate old Bell Atlantic DSL to Verizon is guess is reaching my area as a fact.
I had the same thought you did, these guys just were not told that some changes could really mess up the older clients similar to my situation.
One nice thing about a forum like this is that if you do not know a darn thing about something, you can say nothing. The unfortunate Tech guys feel that saying "Beats the hell out of me" is not a possible response. If I was God, I would let them admit they did not know the answer, but would find out and call back.
What I hate is when they say completely absurd stuff in the hope that you will call someother Tech. It does work for me. I wait 6 or so hours and hope I reach someone else.
But the key rule: Never tell the bozo he is a bozo, and never use profanity, even if tempted to your toes to do so.
My best, carefully worded response: "Let me try and implement your suggestions, and if I still have problems I will call back."
Then I kick the wall.

I was on the phone with verizon tech support for a total of 6 hours
6 HOURS
I was on a router and i told them it's no big deal just test my signal I'm not getting dynamic info. She had me move the modem to every pc in the house. She really wanted me to do it on Xp cause it pretty much makes her job easy. Non of that worked. I got bounced from level 1 - 3 in that 6 hours. I was fed up and about to leave the client because they said they had to to test overnight and they might send me a new modem. I'm walking out the door and the phone rings at my clients for me it was Verizon all giddy saying try it now. And if friggen worked. The walked me threw evertyhing I already have been pounding my head on for the past day. Now I act all cool with them. I know when i tell them im not getting internet on my wirelss boxes they they point to the wireless not working and can't help you. So I just patch a laptop to the router and disable the wirless card and don't even tell em about it. I say I have one of them firewall routers to protect my pc. HAHAHAH they realize when we about done talking that i've been running threw the house testing all the boxes on the router. haha
So how sweet dslqueen is to offer her service i will decline. And notice how she hasn't responded in a year
