A question on a test website states

"IF there are four bits what is the mask"

No other info is given.

The answer given is 255.255.240.0.

A second question asked

"If there are 15 bits, what is the mask?"
The correct answer given was 255.255.255.254

With no other info given how is the conclusion made that it is a Class B network.

Have I missed something?

Those are rather vague questions that they had.

1. No way of knowing without knowing the class of IP address. While it's true that a 4 bit mask (/28) is a .240, it's all irrelevant if you don't know the class of IP address. In this example, their answer is for a Class B address, but they don't even give you the address to find this out.
2. This is totally screwed.

What web site gave you these questions? ------------
Certified in absolutely nothing :)

Just junk questions. People do not understand how hard it is to write a good test question. It's a fine art form from how the question is phrased, the goal of the question, the distractors used, length of answers and the order of answers just to cover a few areas of concern.

I wonder what happened to NetworkDesigner... it used to be a very good site.. then the URL went back to a register asking xx dollars for it and now it's a different site.

Oh well.. such is the nature of the internet.

All good reasons to avoid brain dump sites, as well. I have always been brain-drained after a given cert exam and even tho I am pretty confident that I know the material, I can never remember any questions, with the possible exception of those that I think I missed, after finishing the exam. I generally have a frosty pint of my favorite beverage in mind, as soon as I get my score, anyway. I have developed courses for our local community college and it is very difficult to write a good test question that explains the intent in sufficient detail without giving the answer away.

One key thing that I noted from your message: you said it was a free site, well, "you get what you pay for" springs immediately to mind. I used the Cisco Press CDs from the exam guide series extensively and occasionally sprung for a Boson test to prepare for the CCNP/CCDP exams, but I had to pay for all of them.

Good luck,
