IE7 weird overlay issue 1

I'm seeing a weird overlay over the side nav and part of the image. The page validates as strict. It looks fine in every other browser I've tested (FF 2/3, Safari, IS 6/8) the only time I see it is in IE 7. Does anyone know what is going on?

I can tell you what's going on. The problem is the italics in the <em> tag. IE has had issues with italics in IE6 (all italics text actually expanded the container for a few pixels to accommodate the slant) and I guess there's more bugs in displaying italics.
