Every time I startup IE7, the system stops responding. When I look in Task Manager I see the CPU is at 100%.

If I close Iexplore.exe, the system returns to normal.

At the moment I've installed Firefox for the users, but I'd prefer to find a solution to IE crashing especially as I believe you need to use it to launch Windows Update.

I thought I'd uninstall IE7 but I get a warning message saying that loads of programs have been installed since IE7 and if I remove IE7 they might not work.

Do I need to worry about this warning ? especially as I intend to reinstall IE7 from the Windows Update website afterwards (and hopefully it will work fine).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jay

1 specific PC.

I wasn't aware I had any add-ons running on IE7, but I will follow your advice tomorrow and check the outcome.

Thanks.

If this is for only 1 pc that it's happening on I'd say you may have some adware/spyware/virus/etc that is hanging, juliaatpcgp's reply should help. If it don't, do you have any antispyware/antivirus software installed already?

I have had this happen on both of my computers since upgrading to Internet Explorer 7.

I ran a complete spy ware and virus check and found nothing, but do this first anyway.

I uninstalled IE 7 through the Windows add remove windows components application window in control panel.

I rebooted, ran "Registry Mechanic" then I reinstall IE, through control panel again.

One computer reverted to IE 6 and one reinstalled IE 7.

I reupdated the one that didn't and both work now.

One note, I don't know if this is for real or not but I read on another site that you need to reboot your computer twice before you open the update of IE7 for the first time so I did this.

I haven’t had any problems since.

I own a small computer service company and we see about 25 computers a week that are running XP Pro and Home. It seems that IE7 does crash some systems and others not, on some, you can open IE7 and surf the web, but IE7 will not close down at all, you have to reboot to close it. On some, IE7 will open but you can not surf the web at all, the machines are connect to the net because you can still do email or ping or even run another browser like Firefox or Opera.

This seems to be random and we check all the machines for viruses, spyware, firewall settings, etc. In most cases we advise to owner to let us uninstall IE7, go back to 6, then also suggest Firefox or maybe even Opera.

If not intentional malware, these issues are almost always caused by an incompatible add-on. See my post above about how to check. Some of the most common because of their prevalance (not because they're worse than anything else) are old versions of any of: Google Desktop search, Google Toolbar, Yahoo toolbar. These will not be found as a problem by any malware scanner, the old versions are simply not compatible with IE7. Another likely cause for problems is antispyware tools that lock some important registry keys during the upgrade to IE7. Again there is nothing neccessarily wrong with these tools, but they can cause problems that are really not IE and can not be identified by malware scans.
