Microsoft has released a test version of its next Web browser, but how does it shape up against Firefox?

Microsoft took the wraps off Internet Explorer 7 Tuesday, releasing the new "preview" version of its Web browser to the general public for testing.

The program, still a work in progress, is available for download from the Internet Explorer section of Microsoft's corporate Web site, the company said. The company, which began limited testing in July, had promised to deliver a public beta by the end of March.

"The big update is that it's public," said Margaret Cobb, group product manager for Internet Explorer at Microsoft. "All previous releases were limited."

ZDNet UK's Reviews channel has posted a preview of the IE7 beta. The latest version works only with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and includes many of the features Microsoft has been touting for months. Among them are new security and privacy protection capabilities such as mechanisms designed to combat phishing attacks, spyware and other threats.

Another new feature lets users clear their browsing history more easily and thus wipe out passwords, form data and cookies in one click, the company said.

The new browser also includes tabbed browsing and a search box on a more streamlined toolbar, concepts that should be familiar to users of Firefox, a rival browser distributed by the Mozilla Foundation.

Microsoft said that the new Printing Enhancements and Shrink to Fit printing features enable users to adjust margins, change the page layout, remove headers or footers, and increase or decrease the print space.

Tabbed browsing lets users open multiple Web pages in a single browser window. Microsoft has tried to best Firefox with something called Quick Tabs. That feature provides an at-a-glance, thumbnail view of all open tabs in a single window.

In addition, the program is supposed to let users more easily subscribe to syndicated feeds from news and sports sites, blogs and stores. The browser detects feeds enabled by Real Simple Syndication, or RSS, technology, illuminating an icon on the toolbar. Users can preview, subscribe and scan syndicated headlines directly through the browser, Microsoft said.

IE 7 also includes a number of new features for Web developers, including support for up-and-coming Web-programming technologies known collectively as AJAX.

Microsoft plans to release a final version of IE 7 later this year, around the time the company debuts the next version of its Windows operating system, Windows Vista.

For the sake of clarity, it's expected that Beta software will have bugs. The point of a Beta release is to find the bugs and report them so that they can be fixed for the production release. This is not intended to be used in as a final public release. Unfortunately, there are so much 'beta' software available that the meaning & purpos is lost.

yes a Beta product will have bugs, this has so many it's an insult to call it Beta, that's the point!

I'm a beta tester for software (Making Waves Audio), and have been for many years, the programmer gets it wrong occasionaly, but the software is still normaly usable, this Beta version of IE7 isn't.

I'm not MS bashing or IE bashing (I've been so looking forward to IE7, that's why I tried the Beta version),
but if it's Beta and they want my feedback, my feedback is this. It's the worst Beta i've ever seen of a program and I expected better!

Come on MS, you can do better than this!

Interesting, I've been running IE7 for months. First the beta 1 that was released to developers and now the beta 2. I've had almost no problems. I've even been able to run some internal crapplications we have that require an out of date Java plug-in with no problems.

The only problem I've seen so far is my banking site that tells me my borwser version is not supported.

Wow you've used it for that long, hmmm , I guess we were running the same version, and the first site I checked I found problems.

This site works in IE6,FireFox,Opera, Netscape & AOL but not in IE7, but that still might not mean the site hasn't got a bug ;-)

as you so wisely say
"The software I buy sucks, The software I write sucks. It's time to give up and have a beer..." - Me"

As for the banking i've heard this from many people, but i think that's because the programmer is forcing this msg after checking browser type, not necesarilly that it wouldn't work!

Guess i'll have to wait for the 'Official' release, before i'm impressed.

Did i imagine it or was the cipher strength 256-bit in the previous version, it's 128-bit in beta 2.

1DMF, that's my though on my bank too. They're checking for IE6 instead of IE6 or higher.

(Or being a bank, they made conscious decision not to support a beta since everything might function but they felt they couldn't guarantee security.)

All, I do think that some of the "IE sucks" stuff you see is the same kind of blind MS bashing you see in the OS debates. Just because something is open source doesn't make it automatically better.

I use the latest Firefox as well. There are some things I like better about FF and other I like better in IE. I'm looking forward the the final release of IE7. Since they're both free, it's certainly no big deal to use both anyway.

Looking at some of the comments in this thread, I'm thnking I must have a different Beta version of IE7! I haven't encountered any bugs and have to say I think it is ten times better than IE6 but also agree it looks like Microsoft jumping on Firefox's bandwagon.

We await the an upgrade/update from Microsoft

It does look a bit FF like in places but most browsers look pretty much the same. It's pretty stable for a beta as far as i can tell, the main problem with IE7 is that MS kept waiting for longhorn so it's massively late and they are running to catch up. This means that anything thay add to IE7 will be 'copying' idea from other people, they do seem to of got the RSS right tho.

I tend to agree with your comment, but this is a beta version. Lets hope the final will not be an imitation.

Whether it's a final product or a beta... it's still chock full of stolen features from Firefox. MS, the great imitators. I guess they figure if they make it LOOK like firefox, and it comes default on the system, people will start using it again. :D

Exactly my point about coming second
it's still chock full of stolen features from Firefox

There are features in firefox that are 'stolen' from opera it's not stealing it's just putting in features that users want. Do you really think MS are going to say 'well our users want tabbed browsing but we better not put it in as FF uses that'. You never know you might even see some inovation in the RSS area where MS have got it together. I like the look of the minimal toolbar in IE7 and it's not that similar to FF, how different can a web browser look anyway?

Just my take:

It looks OK from my corner. Not the sweeping improvement that was bantered about on the frontside.

I do think that it was about time MS paid this it's due attention as it is my opinion they dropped the ball on this long ago. As attention/focus was directed at this, I expected more from them. MS really has all the balls in their court if they could only grasp/create a concept as I thought they were going to.

Maybe in "Vista"????........

I hadn't noticed, but it does appear to be missing from this version. However, you still can use File, Send To, ... The only thing missing from there is newsgroups.
