IE7 and MS Word 2003 glitch

Hey everyone. Thanks in advance for any feedback...

Here's my situation. In the last two days, all of the sudden, IE 7 users who open up MS Word 2003 in their browser have limited access to the standard toolbar features. They have to manually add the toolbars by right clicking the menu. When you exit IE7, and open another document up, the standard and formatting toolbars you previously added are gone again. The toolbars also seem unstable, and I couldn't click on certain things.

This just suddenly happened to all IE7 users. Also, theres one more thing. IE7's print function will not print the embeded word document anymore (anothere glitch). It will just print surrounding frames. (Our Intranet is based in Frames)

But I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Has MS rolled out an update or security feature? That's the only thing I can think of. We havn't updated any of our servers within the last two weeks as well.

But if some people could test this out on their end, that would be great.

Update: This problem also occurs in IE 6. Has anyone else experienced hyperlinking Word Documents like I described above all of the sudden?

I don't know about all of a sudden, but the way IE opens downloaded Word files within the broswer is far from straightforward, probably for security reasons.

We use *.dot templates for students to download, complete, save and return, but it's fraught with niggles, including those you list.

We recommend students with their own computers (i.e. not the institutions) install and use Firefox. Linked Word files will then open correctly in a free standing Word window.

Yeah, unfortunately Firefox isn't an option for us inside the organization.

But it's just strange. This is what we're exactly running:

Windows XP PRO
Microsoft Office Pro Edition 2003
IE 6 and 7 are producing the same results with the toolbar (unstable, and won't save added toolbar items the next session).

This all suddenly happened within the last few days. Has anyone else experienced this as well?

We have a work around in place. We're pointing to the actual directorys from the hyperlink that house the templates and files.

We've tried changing all security settings in IE7, even looked at IIS for anything. Seems fishy to me. Feels like I'm being pushed to go with Office 2007 because it works just fine with that. ;-)

Do you see the same behavior when run from "Safe Mode With Networking"?

Have you tried IE7 with "No Add-ons", or in IE6 and IE7, Resetting IE to Default Settings?

In IE6 make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.


As this is a recent happening, have you considered System Restore as an option?

Is there any clues coming from the Event Viewer?

Have you tried the Office "Detect and Repair" option via the Help menu?

You could also look to the MS Office forum for expert help.
