Ok...to keep this simple and hopefully start a new search for the right answer...This thread is basically the same problem as that HUGE thread about IE6 and not being able to open new windows and such. Here is what I am running and the problem has been with me since I took the computer out of the box.

My NEW HP Pavillion Comp. Came with IE6 and WinXP installed...I have not been able to:

1) Open new windows by right clicking on links
2) Open new windows by clicking on a link that has the target="_blank" attribute (which is suppose to open a new window)
3) No use of the back button...new links cancel out the page I was at...Yes, it opens a new window but also closes where I was.
4) The use of "standard" javascripts turns up errors. For example a simple "Bookmark This Page" javascript generates errors.

This is just aweful folks and I tried everything, and I mean everything in that other thread and nothing worked at all...not even close to fixing ONE of those problems. I would think since this problem seems to be such common one that there would be a REAL fix somewhere for it?

Guess I will call Microsoft and/or HP to see what I can do. Does anyone have the right answer.

Once again this is for IE6 on XP!!! Not 98, 2000, Me

Thanks...peace out

Out of curiosity have you tried to see what kind of behaior you get if you uncheck the option "Reuse Windows for Launching Shortcuts". Not that this will solve each issue you mention but will it at least keep previous windows from closing?

Yes...I have tried that option with no luck. Yesterday, I was on the phone with HP (Hewlard Packard support) for about 30 minutes...they blamed Microsoft...so I called microsoft who spent a good 45 minutes with me going over the basics of the problem (which they didn't have to do because they usually charge 35 dollars per incident for support, but they did and they covered ALL methods from the larger thread) and we couldn't figure it out. He then told me (and he really is not passing the buck) I need to contact a "higher" up support person at HP because they are the one who bought the licence from Microsoft to install IE and XP on their computers...and that makes sense...I have used IE6 on other computers and never had a problem...until I get this brand new HP. I suspect that the problem lies in the way it either a) was installed at the factory or b) IE6 doesn't get along with all that "crap" that computers are jammed with these days (you know, the free this and the free that, the pop up stopper, the free games, etc....) As a matter of fact, when I completley wiped that FREEDOM security off my computer, my javascript started working right again and YES, I had the ad and pop up stopper turned OFF on it while it was on my system...so go figure?

Anyhow, I called back HP and got a really helpful gentleman this time who took a good hour with me, and we went through all the fixes he could find or think of and still we couldn't get it working...I give him credit though...he did try.

So I guess I am going to pay microsoft to have a "real" (haha) tech help me fix the problem. The good news is that if they don't solve your problem, and you REQUEST your money back, they will do so...ya gotta request it though!

The only work around that I have been doing to make my life easier for now (for those who want to know) is I have been dragging all links to the sddress bar as that will give you the BABK button option of returning where you were.

That's all for now....
