I just installed IE 6.0

I tested a page locally, it has the word "smoking" in it.When checking the page in IE6.0 this word is automatically linked to:

Very annoying, is there a way to cancel this. What kinda policy is this from Microsoft? The thick orange underline is ugly and besides that there is just no justification for putting automatic advertisement on anyones web site for free!

Can this option be turned of through scripting?

Thanks,
Ron

Looks like an MS-Smart Tag.

You can do a couple of things here:

Re-install IE6 to get rid of it, b/c you have somehow activated it, The default is off, but somehow it is on.

or

On all your webpages you can use a META trag to prevent them from appearing:

<meta name=&quot;MSSmartTagsPreventParsing&quot; content=&quot;TRUE&quot;>

Hope this helps!

there is also the posibility that you have adware on your computer. it dose this sort of thing, and gets on there when you install apps made by people with low morals. have you installed anything AFTER you instaled IE6?

Thanks for the input guys!

I tried the meta tag Spiderix posted and this worked. So apparantly this new 'smart' feature was turned on by default (I didn't download IE6.0 from microsoft site but from a CD of a third party).

Glad to know that you can prevent this from happening on someone elses computer!

Thanks

You might want to download IE yourself, then re-install it, for one simple reason:

Some webmasters actualy allow smart tags in their pages or even put them in there. Of course you don't have access to their site so it can't be turned off, and you will still see them unless you re-install IE. I have contacted MS and they said that once it's on it's on. So re-install will turn it off. But I would alway include the META tag on all sites you make so that they don;t interfere with your work.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for making me aware of that,

It's fine when those smart tags show up on other web sites. But I just to be in control what shows up on sites I make. This thick orange underline and bright yellow background when moving the mouse over the link just doesnot look nice in the design, not too speak about linking to other sites without any benefit for myself or my clients.
