IE6 stops opening links

I'm not sure if this is a one of a kind issue. IE6 (on XP Home) stops responding after a couple of minutes. There was a virus on the system but it's been cleaned. I thought there might be some corruption with IE but after re-installing it still fails.

I have not uninstalled it completely yet. (I'm not sure that's possible.)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Alien

Run through the faq about keeping a system clear of Malware below.

Previous to my post the system was scanned by two antivirus tools (Norton & NOD32) and one spyware tool (Spybot).

Can you run through the exact steps in the FAQ mentioned. Its very important that you do.

I did. Before I ran the first scan I disabled Recovery, closed all applications, and disabled the network connection. I rebooting I performed the same steps for the second scan. Again I rebooted and performed the same steps for the spyware scan. The system is clean.

Post a Hijack This! log, then.

You might try, in addition to skippy and carr's advice above, a clean and restoration of your Winsock service stack with this free and easy to use utility: faq779-4625

If you remember the virus that was on the machine, it would be helpful to let us know also. Sometimes in the process of cleaning the virus, certain files get deleted as there is no way to properly clean the virus.

The virus was MyDoom. But if the files were deleted during the cleaning, the reinstallation of IE6 should have fixed that.

bcastner,

I appreciate the alternate suggestion. I will look into it, but in this case the browser works fine for a few minutes then stops returning pages. If it was a winsock issue I would think the browser wouldn't work at all.

Thoughts?

That makes sense. I'd still suggest you post a log and loet us have a look.

I think there's a link to it in bcastner's FAQ, but you can get it here:
Scan your pc and copy/paste the log in its entirety back here.
