I am running Windows 98SE, access the net via cable modem. In the beginning the connection is fast but over time of a couple of hours it slows down to a crawl. If i re-boot the connection is fast again for a while. I would appreciate any help on this irritating problem. Thank You in advance.

IE 6.0 is a dog. Go back to IE 5.5 or 5.0. They're better and run faster.

If this happens over time and rebooting resolves the problem temporarily, it sounds like your system resources are dropping. The next time this happens to you, right-click My Computer on your desktop and go to Properties. Then jump over to the 'Performance' tab to check the % of free resources. If it is below 50%, then that is your problem and not Internet Explorer.

Basically, you want to minimize the amount of apps you have loading with Windows and left running in the background. For example, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL right after rebooting. You should see the 'Close Program' dialog box. In this list, you want to have less than 15 processes listed (less than 10 preferred). Also, you want that % of free resources to be above 80% after boot (over 90% preferred).

msconfig is a utility you can use to help manage your startup. Go to Start-Run, type msconfig and hit enter. The startup tab lists everything that's loading with Windows. Only disable what you recognize and post back if you need help...

I had exactly the same problem with my present computer sometime back.
I was running 98SE with 512mb of RAM and a seperate partition for the swapfile and IE5 on a 56k modem.

Since then I have done the following:-

1. Reformatted and clean instal of 98SE
2. Installed Cacheman to handle the 512mb of RAM that
98SE finds very difficult to manage. The link is
3. Upgraded to IE6+SP1
4. Limited the background programs to system tray, norton
firewall, norton AV, Cacheman and nopops.
5. Made sure that there was nothing scheduled in Task
Manager.
6. I empty out the Temp Internet folder and defrag on a
frequent basis.

Running this setup I do not get any slowdown in an IE session that previously required rebooting at least once per logon.
I found that some of the worst programs for messing up an internet session were Tkbelle, Still Image monitor, Task Monitor and Real Player amongst others, this is why I limited the startup programs to the absolute minimum.
Hope this helps, it was the solution for my internet problems.

Thanks to all for your help. I have tried all the suggestions but the problem still persists. I have found out that if I unplug the power from the cable modem and plug it back in, after the modem resets the connection is good again for a while. Could the problem be with the cable service?? not he pc.

SammyK,
Did you try limiting the amount of apps running in the background? It does sound like it's the connection, not your pc, but as a test try disabling some apps. CTRL-ALT-DEL and "end task" on everything except Explorer and Systray. See if the problem reoccurs if these are the only two running...
