Ok, now this is strange....

I am running XPPro SP1, with IE6 and the latest SP. I've just installed all of this, and I'm experiencing a weird IE problem

It seems that some links just don't work. For example, when I search in yahoo, and it returns a set of links - if I click on them, its a dead link. BUT if I cut the url and paste it in the address bar, it works.

Also, on my Yahoo homepage, if I click on the inbox link, it too is dead. Yet I can still get to my mailbox through other means. I know this is speficic to my machine because I can get to it on other machines without any issue.

All my security settings are at default medium, and I've applied SP's...I've even tried repairing through the IE6 on Add/Remove programs panel.....any suggestions?

Go into regedit and check this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL

What is the value for "DefaultPrefix", and its subkey "Prefixes?"

Carrr

the value for defaultprefix is: http://
the value for prefixes is: http://

try going to internet options>adanced tab> click "restore defaults" button above cancel. long shot but worth a try. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Well I have solved the problem on my machine after extensive searching and finally stumbling on posts to this forum from 2 years ago using Google!!! I am running WIN98SE with IE6 and was having the open new window link problem until I ran the repair file below, which by the way looks to apparently be available on microsoft's site but when looking in the knowledge database for a solution to my problem was unable to find such a fix available (they posted to call tech support and pay to obtain a fix they would supply after trying the work arounds listed such as re-registering the .dll files and checking the registry entries). You would think after 2 years of people reporting the same problem they would post to the article that older versions of the .dll files may also be the root of the problem. It seems a significant amount of people corrected the problem overwriting the oleaut32.dll file with an older version using system file checker. I believe that the following repair does just that, so when it asks if you want to replace the newer files you have, say "yes" :)

Wow.

The restore defaults trick actually worked. Although I wonder how they got hosed in the first place.....nah, who cares! It works now
