I am using IE 6, update version SP2 on a laptop. It has a wireless card which works fine.

Recently there was a new DSL line installed and I hooked up to it, shutting my wireless card off. But when I click to open the IE browser I get a message in the bottom left "Connecting to site 10.8.8.18", a couple of progression bars in the lower right and then after about 15 seconds a completely blank/white screen. If I manually enter a website I get error messages implying that I typed the site address into the Google search bar.

If I turn on my wireless card I get the same symptoms. It makes no difference.

But if I disconnect the patch cord for this new DSL line, and turn on my wireless card, I have no problems getting onto the Internet. Everything is working fine.

Is there a setting or switch I can check for to resolve my problem? Or, is it something to do with this new DSL line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In the bottom right do you actually ever get a connection signal or do the computers keep a red x over themselves?

Did that happen in Internet explorer? What happens in firefox?

If you have another network cord may want to try that?

Are you familiar with cmd prompt? If so.

Type ipconfig /all > enter

What does it say?

If you get a gateway try to ping it since it should be the modem, see if that is the problem.

If you can ping the modem try to ping the dns server you get.
Also try to ping 4.2.2.3.

Wow, "JACK" where do I begin?

In the systray I do not see a red X over the computers. When I click on this it seems that the Local Area connection is still fine.

As before, this is all happening in IE6. I get a completely 'white screen' results.

I am not using nor do I have FireFox.

I will try another network cord and get back to you if it does anything different.

I was able to do 'ipconfig /all' and got a lot of data! What am I looking for here? Everything appears to be fine but I'm not sure.

What do you mean by "if you get a gateway..."? Can you please elaborate?

When I 'ping 4.2.2.3.' the response I get is "Pinging 4.2.2.3. [4.2.2.3] with 32 bytes of data:"

Then I get the message "Request timed out" 4 times.

Then I get
"Ping statistics
Packets sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4"

Under the ipconfig /all you will see a default gateway listed with an address.

Ping that address (that address is the ip address of your modem). If you can ping that but still cant get to internet then the modem is the problem.

Also when you do the ipconfig /all again could you take a screenshot of what it shows (shift + print screen) and just post it up here or even copy paste the fields so i can look over your addresses.

I can ping the default gateway address, I think. What next then if the modem is the problem? Because I can use the DSL line to successfully get at my company's LAN drives directly. Is there a setting on the modem that is preventing me from getting onto the internet?

I'm having problems with pasting the "ipconfig" screen. I did shift + print screen, but then what? I did Control V but nothing happens.

Can I do a file attachment?

Maybe your ISP's web has a troubleshoot guide. I'd take a look there.

Cheers,
Dian

It sounds like the modem could be handing out a proxy which would be weird.

Open IE and goto tools > internet options > connections tab > lan settings and see if the use a proxy server is checked. If so uncheck it and then restart IE and see what happens.

Well JACK I have found something else out. When I get my 'compeletely white' screen I am unable to use any of the commands at the top, such as File / Edit / View ....

That is, when I select and click on Tools / Internet Options , nothing happens!

So I disconnected the patch cord, activated my wireless card, and got back onto the internet, and went into the screen that you asked me to check. No, that particular option is unchecked.

But the 'Use automatic configuration script' is checked. Does this matter?

The use automatic configuration does not matter, it is usually checked so your ok with that.

Is this happening at home or work?

It could be a permission issue to keep you from changing the proxy settings and the 10.8.8.18 could be an internal address its trying to connect to.
