IE6 downloading problems PLEZ help

the other day i got a new cover disc with a computer mag i brought and on the disc there was a copy of IE6.

after installing it everything was going really well till i tryed to download somthing.

first of all it didn't come up with the "save as" box but instead started to do the download in the status bar and when it compleated it then gave me the option to open it or save it i tryed both and they both gave me the same message, that there were no files or data. my right click "save as" still works but some sites disable the right click and there for i can't download the files.

i have also tryed unstalling IE6 and putting back IE5.5 (which was working fine) but after installing IE6 it seems that my problem still remains in all older versions

I've installed IE6 on Win98 Op system. The download and install seem fined, however since I have done this I am unable to download any files.

I don't get the window which asks if you want to save the file to disk or run it from that location anymore. All I get is an icon in the upper left corner of the window.

What can I do to repair this problem?

Hi Lanie,

What happens if you right click on the link, and click on the option for 'Save As'. Does it work then??

Also, try going to Tools->Internet Options, and click on the Security tab, in there set your Security Level to one less then it is....

What you can try is go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools and then when the window opens up, click on Tools->Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
This will attempt to repair IE.

If all this doesn't work, go to Start->Run and type regedit and navagite to the following folder (key)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
and in here, you should see some file extentions, like .mid or .mov, and there might be one for .exe, if so, click on the folder that says .exe and delete it.
Close IE and regedit, and then start IE again, see if that works....(you MIGHT have to restart your PC)

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.

Before I screw anything up, if I export the Registry and then delete the above folders or just the .exe and restart and things don't work I can reboot to MSDOS and do a scanreg /restore and that will, in fact, put my system back to what it was before I messed it up, right?

Hi Lanie,

deleting that key is the solution to that problem, and should not cause and problems with AVX.

To backup the registry, go to Start->Run, and type scanregw. Choose 'Yes' to backup the registry.

Then you are safe to play!

When you are deleting the key and have navigated to it...click on the .exe key (folder) in the left hand window, and press Delete on the keyboard. When it is deleted close the reg and restart Internet Explorer if it is open. This should do the trick...good luck!

Go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Security tab, then the Custom Level button and make sure file Download is enabled under the &quot;Downloads&quot; section.

Just because someone ought to mention it, it is possible to export only a part of the registry. A nice idea, especialy when (as on my system) a complete registry export is upward of 60 megs. I've found the Branch/Key export feature useful for backing up particular sets of registry &quot;undo&quot; info on disk.

Whew!

I was having the same problem as Lanie, except it was in
Windows Me.

Tried the Fix (edited the .exe from the MSIE plugins key)
and it worked like a charm.

Ditto the above comment.
Quicktime must have f*@ked up (like anything Apple touches...) because it had associated EXE's with QT audio and had it locked up in the plugins keys.

BTW, I am using IE 5.5 on NT4 SP6 (i think it's 6 anyhow).
