Hi, I'm receiving messages stating that my browser is not the latest version of IE6, and that I should download the newest version.

The browser I am using is IE6! Version 6.0.2800.

Any reason why this would be the case? Is it something to do with a previous version of IE or the system registry?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Darren

Thanks bcastner, but there is still some way to go. I downloaded and installed the msmxl3usa.msi file (base XML, as suggested) and that did, in fact, permit the application of the KB832414 hotfix, (see above). Problem is that, after all that and a reboot, the xmsxml3 error persists and windows update is still blocked. Btw I am running XP home.

Desperate measures: I got to the windowsupdate site (in a roundabout way via SUS) and reloaded SP1 for XP. Miraculously, the problems have disappeared and no new ones have shown up. windowsupdate works, no program denies access because i use an "unknown browser" (i use IE6.0-SP1) and the 80072f76 errors have disappeared. I know that this is not very satisfactory, as it does not explain anything about what went on and why the problems showed up in the first place, but it worked for me and may work for others.

Quoting myself above:

You may be able to resolve this issue by adding the following Web sites to the trusted sites list in Internet Options:

;(Note: The https is correct)

To add these web sites to the list, follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Security."
4. Click the Trusted Sites icon.
5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all sites in this zone."
7. Add all four sites listed above.

To: Anyone who can help me
I would like to reiterate the question posed below by another user because I'm still having the same problem and cannot find an answer...
Back on Feb. 20th, the user "lindan" asked "What is iexploreskins anyway? It seems to be an .exe file that is suddenly trying to ask for access from my computer to an ip address thru my firewall (ZoneAlarm). I keep blocking it because I don't know what it is. I did a search on it and found it under Programs/Toolbar that I never saw it there before and I have not seen it on other computer systems that I have access to. It does not appear in the Uninstall Software list. So what is it?"
Thanks for your help.

I had this problem and I'm running norton internet security 2003. I had selected the option to turn off or block sending information about my browser.

In norton internet security 2003 select options, the web content tab and select to permit, Information about your Web Browser.

Hope this helps.

Thank you TLHDS. I have been following this thread for a month hoping for a solution to this problem and you provided it.

I have Norton Firewall and Norton Antivirus. I resolved the browser issue by reconfiguring Privacy Control, Checking "Custom Level" and unchecking the box for "Enable
Browser Privacy".

Thank you,TLHDS.

I have had unceasing frustration from this stupid little problem.

I have had the same problem with trying to open my hotmail and getting the page that says I am not using a current version of I E. I have version 6.0.2800 and have not had any problems. On top of that I could not do any windows updates. All I got was the welcome page and could not get any farther. I have tried to download I E 6 and it tells me I already have it and will not allow me to download it. I want to thank bcastner, TLHDS, and goodstar. The three of you solved my problem. I also use Norton Personal firewall and did as they said. I also used one of the windows update links from bcastner and got in there and was able to get some updates (14 to be exact) So thank you folks for the help with this problem. The problem was Norton Firewall.
