Hi, I'm receiving messages stating that my browser is not the latest version of IE6, and that I should download the newest version.

The browser I am using is IE6! Version 6.0.2800.

Any reason why this would be the case? Is it something to do with a previous version of IE or the system registry?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Darren

Where are your receiving this message from? Is it just a clever banner ad perhaps?

You in fact do not have the most current version of the browser.

Head to Windows Update site and apply the cumulative update for IE.

Cheers Bcastner.

I did as you requested and received the following error message when visiting;

msxml3.dll error '80072f76'
The requested header was not found
/library/toolbar/3.0/vb.asp, line 34

Any ideas, missing dll file on my PC. I'm using Windows XP.

Cheers,
Darren

There is not to my knowledge any reason for an .asp page to be involved in the application of a Cumulative IE update, the last dated 2-2-2004.

Lets try this:

. Force a clean install of IE 6
. Then upgrade it

To do this follow exactly (no arguments) Daniel Petri's notes for the reinstall:
. Reboot, and head to the MS Update site. There is a cumulative IE Hotfix and security patch done this week. Let it do its thing.

Reboot and report back.

If you're running a firewall and have it locked down, you can also get this error. Zonealarm or Norton Personal Firewall will cause this error in my experience.

I too am getting this message every time I try to download
updates to IE from Microsoft and similar messages on various other sites.
"
msxml3.dll error '80072f76'

The requested header was not found

/library/toolbar/3.0/js.asp, line 31
"

Did the suggestion of a clean install of IE and reboot work? I've been struggling with this issue for some time now!

I am also having this problem. I tried to do a clean install.
It didn't work for me. If you have any further advice I would greatly appreciate it. I have to say I am getting pretty flustered by this stupid message:

msxml3.dll error '80072f76'

The requested header was not found

/library/toolbar/3.0/js.asp, line 36

Thanks,
-A

When you start getting Java errors, sometimes it is caused by the Java software being outdated or currupted. If you've followed the FAQ to ensure that you don't have adware, spyware, hijacks, viruses, etc, and you followed the instructions to do a scratch load, try downloading java again and see if it fixes the problem. BTW, mydoom and klez virus can cause xml errors too. :) To update your java, go to www.java.com Latest version was 1.4 when I checked a few weeks ago.

I, too, am getting the error:

msxml3.dll error '80072f76'
The requested header was not found
/library/toolbar/3.0/js.asp, line 36

reported by Auri and others earlier. I believe it started to happen after I downloaded some patch from windowsupdate but it continues to persist even though I restored the system to a much earlier version.

In addition:
a) windowsupdate no longer does anything (it does not connect); and
b) I get "IExploreSkins has encountered an error and needs to close" message with every change of a page.

I suspect it is all related, as it started to happen at the same time. Did all the normal tests (virus, spyware etc, all negative). In the hope that someone has a clue?

I too am in this exact situation, and I am soooooooo glad I found you! The only other thing I've noticed that isn't mentioned here is sometimes when I get the message

msxml3.dll error '80072f76'
The requested header was not found
/library/toolbar/3.0/js.asp, line 36

I can then try again and get the site page to appear. I am getting this message when trying to pull sites up, and when clicking a page link on a site. I might get the site up, and upon clicking to view something there, get the above error message.

Also, I am getting those messages everyone described about the Internet Explorer version being outdated when I open my hotmail mailbox, (right before the mailbox is opened), and when I use my Windows Media Player...clicking to try to go to the Windows Media site.

All of the above is a description down to the last detail of what's happening, but it all began when I downloaded two softwares, AOL Instant Messager Spy, from the Zemerick site ( )and WinZip's trial version to unzip the AOL IM Spy installation file. I suspect this is all related because my problems began with that zipped download. I also suspected some sort of virus, but I can't find one. Alternatively, during the installation of the IM Spy program, I was prompted to change some setting that might be causing all of this.

I'm hoping by sharing all this with you, you can tell me if this is indeed a worm or something that my antivirus is missing or if it is the activation/deactivation I was prompted to do causing all this. Please tell me what to do.

I do weekly and daily updates to antivirus and to my windows. After this all happened, I ran live update for the antivirus, and I also went to to do any needed updates. The windowsupdate site would not work anymore, and I noticed the problems described in this thread. I did a full system scan with my antivirus, and it's not picking anything up.

Also, my cursor freezes at times now, and sometimes it has a life of its own. It will suddenly move all the way across the screen to the edge when I'm moving slowly to click on something in the middle.

Here is a description of what happened initially:
****************
Software & versions involved:

Windows 2000 Professional
Version is Microsoft Windows Version 5.0, Service Pack 4

AOL Instant Messenger
Version 5.2.3292

Message Spy for AOL IM
Version 2.1.0.0

WinZip 8.1 SR-1 (5266)

Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106CO
Update versions SP1 Q330994
***************

Problems:

I downloaded the trial of Message Spy from online. I had to download WinZip's trial version so I could unzip the installation file and run it. I set the program to load at startup. During installation, it told me that Microsoft XP 98 had been disabled and the program wouldn't work without it. I have Windows 2000 Pro; so, I was confused by this. It asked if I wanted to activate it, and I chose "yes". The install went smoothly, and the program worked fine. The <CTRL> <F3> hotkey combination worked fine as well.

The three files installed were:
logs
lose_ms
ms_aim

Then I purchased the software, and I used the code in the confirmation email to unlock it. Everything worked fine...until the next time I rebooted my computer.

Basically, when I try to run this program, the window series I describe below pops up, and I can't get out of it without using Task Manager, and when I do, it also closes the AOL IM Spy.

When I try to run the program, a window pops up saying
"Backup Dell-Installed Programs
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Backup Dell-Installed Programs' disk and click OK. Use feature from 1. OK or Cancel"

If I choose OK at this point (I didn't have the CD handy and was afraid to use it anyway):
"Backup Dell-Installed Programs
The path '1' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'DellBckp.msi' in a folder from which you can install the profeuct Backup Dell-Installed Programs. OK"

If I choose Cancel:
"Backup Dell-Installed Programs
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Backup Dell-Installed Program.s The Windwos Installer cannot continue. OK"

Choosing OK at this point:
"Preparing to install...gathering required information
Please wait while windows configures Backup Dell-Installed Programs"
and it starts again at the beginning.

I opened the Task Manager to close the "Backup Dell-Installed Programs" cycle. The list shows, separately, "Backup Dell-Installed Programs" and "Message Spy for AOL IM" are both running. When I close the "Backup Dell-Installed Programs" cycle, Message Spy closes too.

If I go to the files and click on the application file, ms_aim, the "Backup Dell-Installed Programs" cycle starts up again.

I tried erasing and reinstalling the AOL IM Spy, and all of this still goes on.
*********************

So that's my confusing tale. Please help me figure out what's wrong and fix it! Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

Katie

What is iexploreskins anyway? It seems to be an .exe file that is suddenly trying to ask for access from my computer to an ip address thru my firewall (ZoneAlarm). I keep blocking it because I don't know what it is. I did a search on it and found it under Programs/Toolbar that I never saw it there before and I have not seen it on other computer systems that I have access to. It does not appear in the Uninstall Software list. So what is it?

I tried the suggestion by bcastner (thanks!), installed 831167, without any effect upon the problems.

Here's the crazy stuff. I reverted to a very early edition of IE 6.0, and the problems went away. However, windowsupdate automatically downloaded all the patches since time immemorial. I applied the patches, rebooted and back to exactly the same problem. (I tried bcastner's suggestion after all this). All the problems minus the IExploreSkins.

I now know the problem is purely with some MS patch that is causing the problems. It must be a patch in the last month, because these problems did not exist before that time. I suggest the problems people have reported are due solely to some MS patch and nothing else. Thoughts anyone?

Problem Description:
User receives a 0x80072F76 error when visiting the Windows Update Site. The Windows Update.log file will have error entries similar to the following:
2002-11-25 23:25:11 04:25:11 Error IUCTL Failed to download iuident.cab
from http://
windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/ to C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4\temp
(Error 0x80072F76)

Resolutions:
This is a blocking issue. The client computer is unable to connect to a component of the Windows Update site. Most likely this is due to misconfigured proxy/firewall settings, incorrect DNS entries or some application running on the client computer that interacts with Web connections and is blocking the connection. Here are a few ways to try to resolve this issue:

Suggestion 1
===========

Check your HOSTS file (it may also be called HOSTS.SAM) and make sure you don't have any static IP entries for the Windows Update web site listed in the file. If you are running Win98/ME, the HOSTS file will be in this folder:

C:\Windows

If you are running WinNT/2K/XP, it will be in this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

You can use Notepad to open the HOSTS file. You may need to "tell" Windows to use Notepad to open the file.

Applications like web accelerators, TweakMasterDNS, etc. can add static IP entries for the Windows Update site into your HOSTS file and when this happens you will get the 0x80072F76 error message.

Suggestion 2
===========

Check your firewall/proxy settings and also try disabling your firewall. This error is the result of your PC's inability to connect to a component of the Windows Update site. Disable all 3rd party applications (including
anti-virus) before accessing the site.

Suggestion 3
===========

You may be able to resolve this issue by adding the following Web sites to the trusted sites list in Internet Options:

(Note: The https is correct)

To add these web sites to the list, follow these steps:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Security."
4. Click the Trusted Sites icon.
5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all sites in this zone."
7. Add all four sites listed above.

Suggestion 4
===========

This issue may be resolved by adding the Windows Update sites to the exceptions list in the Internet Options Proxy Settings.
To access the Exceptions settings:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click "Tools" and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Connections" and then click "LAN Settings."
4. Click "Advanced" and add windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com, and download.windowsupdate.com to the exceptions list.If you run other proxy/firewall software, then add the sites
to the exception list for those applications as well.

Suggestion 5
===========

As a test, try this link:

When you click this link, you should see a popup message asking if you want to Open the file, or Save it to your computer. If you are unable to connect to this link and see a Page Cannot Be Displayed-type error, then this confirms that some aspect of your Internet connection is preventing you from reaching the Windows Update site.

Suggestion 6
===========

This error may also occur with Mailgate from previous to version 3.5.171 beta where the issue seems to have been corrected.
The excerpt below is from the release notes for the MailGate 3.5.171 Beta:

1.1 SDR0137 - Added support for the HTTP HEAD command in the Web proxy. This command is used by the Microsoft Windows XP update service.

I applied the KB832414 hotfix suggested by bcastner in the last post. I saved it to disk but cannot apply it as it returns an error: "an error occured while setup was trying to verify the version of M/S Data Access Components currently installed"

The error log is in a file C:\Windows\dahotfix.log; I am reproducing the relevant section from that file:

17:38:13]: Executing PreInstallActions for package.
[17:38:13]: Loading function CheckForMSXML30 from internal function list.
[17:38:13]: Checking to see if MSXML 3.0 is currently installed on the machine.
[17:38:13]: Dll existance verified, reading version.
[17:38:13]: Target Dll version: 8.20.8730.1
[17:38:13]: Comparing SP version at target: 20 to 40 at source
[17:38:13]: ERROR: SP version Check failure.
[17:38:13]: MSXML 3.0 is NOT installed on the machine.
[17:38:13]: The action CheckForMSXML30(40) returned FALSE.
[17:38:13]: This action was deemed critical, skiping other actions in this package

I can't think of anything that's greater fun on a Saturday afternoon...
