I have been having a problem accessing the Mcafee site, and I think I may have found out why, but I'd appreciate some input, and if possible a resolution.

When you first log into the site the progress bar keeps going and nothing happens. I think a cookie is attempted to be accessed, but since it comes from a different Mcafee domain, I think IE6 blocks it, even though the cookie setting is at the lowest setting. As far as I can figure, this still does not allow one site to access another sites' cookies. Am I right or is there something else happening, and does anyone have a solution?

BTW no, I don't wait until the progress bar finishes, it never seems to, so I don't get any errors.

Thanks

Not sure, Paul, I have had only a couple problems and mine are set to accept first party and block 3rd party cookies.

Are you using the online scan?

If not, simply find the latest DAT files here:

Hi reg,

I personally wouldn't go anywhere near online scanning. A client of mine got a virus scare and couldn't access the AV site for two days, so was without updated AV files :-(

Actually I think I may have tracked down the problem after not being able to get into my online account for my webserver. After lots of suggestions (well-meaning but unhelpful) from the hosting companies techs, I found that when I upgraded from 5.5 to 6, the User authentication logon had been changed in the security settings to Anonymous Logon. I changed it to Automatic logon with current user name and voila! I could log back on to all the sites I had been having trouble with. I don't know how this effects security though, any comments?

Paul,

Good to hear, I wouldn't either!

I now know what you mean, but have had no experience with that particular setting, sorry.

I've tried locating some info, but everything seeems to point to Windows 2000 or IIS.

Take a look at this page...it's over my head, may mean something to you:

Hello,
On websites off our customers we have found this problem to..
In websites off the customers we call pages from our webserver to show ocsasion motorcycles...and in IE6 nothing happens because it blocks 3rd party cookies.

ANy suggestions.........very welcome

Thanks

reg,

I think what that link shows is if a site is using Win2K or any other Win32 server, it can set permissions to deny access unless the right authentication request is returned by the client. The setting I referenced allows the client to send no authentication (anonymous) or various levels of authentication (I think):p It would seem that the McAfee site requires proper authentication after you have subscribed to something or other, since it uses asp I assume it's running on Win2K. Trouble seems to be with the way the cookies work however, as you never get an access denied error. Troublesome. Still it works now :)

sandjes,

Have you tried changing the Privacy setting to Accept all cookies?

Dear paulwood,
Yes this works ok for me but i cant run to the computer of every visitor to change there default settings:)

When i logged in to this website and set the reminder...i deed see a page where Tek-Tips showed me that they tried to put a cookie....with the question continue?

But will this work also for writing third party cookies?
our .cfm page is the third party trying to write the cookie (cftoken - cfid). Our .cfm must load inside other parties website...and write the cookie.
And if so how can i do this?
Thanks a lot!

The solution was: Session.URLToken
I came on this idear by looking at the url from this website...!
A combination of the CFID and CFToken in the form CFID=IDNum&CFTOKEN=tokenNum. This variable if the client does not support cookies and you must pass the CFID and CFToken variables from page to page.

Hey Paulwood,
Did you find the answer to this question?
I have the same problem with IE6 on just one of my systems running W2K Pro.

Your original question below:

Dtennis,

I wish I could say I have an answer that works all the time, but it just isn't consistent enough. The only way I have been able to consistently get onto the McAfee site is to delete all the McAfee cookies from the Cookie and Temporary Internet File folders and not log on when I get to the site. I have had to change the cookie behaviour to accept all cookies for other reasons, but I don't think this has much bearing on it.

The McAfee cookies have paul@ as well as paul@mcafee.txt. I don't know what the difference is, but since wiping all McAfee cookies I now seem to have just two, and I can get on the site X-) Hope this helps, I'm not sure what it proves though.
