Windows 98 IE5.5.5 IE.6
Problem -When attempting to download any exe file from any site eg application from CNET:
1. I do not get open / save dialogue box
2. The word done appears very quickly in status line
3. A small rectangular icon with properties = HTTP with no description etc, appears top LH corner of browser window.

Cannot think of any problems or actions previous.
Able to download other files eg PDF, JPEG, zip
Tried reloading IE5.5 - problem remains
Loaded IE.6 - Problem remains.
Tried repairing Explorer.
Tried MS support site only similar item found refers to IE4. (Q140991.

Could it be that browser trying to open exe file and not giving option to save ?

Please help

Kolback-
Scroll up and read the post I left on Sept. 27 in this thread....

Then I'd try reinstalling IE to at least 5.5 Service Pack 2.
Depending on what O/S you are running, install the latest service pack to get fresh files in there.

Whitemtntn-

Now I´ve tried to reinstall IE 5.5 SP2 without any luck. I have other problems also which I think can have something to do with this.

When I shutdown and start, my network card Intel Pro/100 stop working, error code 10.

I´ve tried reinstall drivers and other slots but that didn´t help me.

The network card is using the same IRQ as my sound card but I don´t think that cause it. But I´m not sure.

Any ideas?

Kolback-
Sound cards are notorious for being picky and hogging resources that other things might need. I'd try uninstalling the sound card, then reinstalling the network card to see if the error goes away.
Here, check the website of the network card manufacturer for details about your error.

Also go into your BIOS and make sure that your PCI slots are all assigned to different IRQs
I think you should try what i suggested with the sound card.

To Whitemtntn,

RE: Q180553

THANKS!!!! I've been scouring the web for the fix. Worked great! I'd like to know why QuickTime decided to take over the .exe extension?

To Whitemtmntn

I was directed to your post by Belfield as I have been experiencing the exact problem ( (i.e. IE6 will not download .exe files.) Unfortunately your posted solution of deleting the “Extension” key has not worked for me. After I delete this folder, it is recreated by Windows each time I try to download an .exe file from say cnet! Am I doing this right? (I’m clueless as to the Registry in general) Any advise would be appreciated.

I have tracked down the offending program. i use AVX for anti virus. AVX has a download monitor. When this feature is turned on, in causes Windows to recreate the Extention key. When I turn this feature off and delete the "extention" folder, downloads work fine.

Running IE6 with windows 98, when trying to download windows updates, the download box comes up, but the downloads do not start. The same happens with .exe files.Driving me crazy!

alinjay,
Have yo ran through all of the above listed fixes to now avail?
(TrendMicro PcCillin can cause download problems when it's running.)

To Carrr.
Yes, I have tried all these over a period of time. When I click on a .exe program download, the save to box comes up which I fill in, then the download box comes up but the download doesn't start. If left long enough, the system times out.

alinjay,

You're not running any sort of McAfee product, are you? If so, which...??

To Carrr
No McAfee. Am running Norton, but the problem is still there with no virus controls at all. Is there anywhere I can get a list of what SHOULD be in the registry, in case there is anything else missing. I have done a full restore, but I dont know whether this affects the registry or not if theres anything missing

I am having a similar problem.
My problem is the exe file gets loaded as if it were text into the browser. All junk chars.
The save to disk window never comes up.

I am on IE 5.5, Win2000

I have checked all above fixes with no luck.
What else can I check?
