Windows 98 IE5.5.5 IE.6
Problem -When attempting to download any exe file from any site eg application from CNET:
1. I do not get open / save dialogue box
2. The word done appears very quickly in status line
3. A small rectangular icon with properties = HTTP with no description etc, appears top LH corner of browser window.

Cannot think of any problems or actions previous.
Able to download other files eg PDF, JPEG, zip
Tried reloading IE5.5 - problem remains
Loaded IE.6 - Problem remains.
Tried repairing Explorer.
Tried MS support site only similar item found refers to IE4. (Q140991.

Could it be that browser trying to open exe file and not giving option to save ?

Please help

Belfield,

Make sure this registry key has the following information:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
@="exefile"

reghakr

reghakr, I'm having the same problem as Belfield. I checked the registry and found the following under [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]

Default = "exefile"
Content Type = "application/x-msdownload"

I don't quite understand what you mean by the "@" symbol. Can you explain?

The @ symbol means it appears next to the (Default) value in the right pane window. In other words, if you right-click on the (Default) entry and choose modify, exefile should appear in the Value data: box.

Also, go to View>FolderOptions, click the File Types tab, scroll to the .zip extension, click the edit button and make sure "confirm open after download" is checked.

reghakr

Reghakr, I did everything you suggested and still the problem exists. It seems funny though that I can still download from MicroSofts site.

Does the security setting in IE have anything to do with whether you can download certain types of files or not. I tried adding the ZDNet site to the "Trusted Sites" and it still wouldn't work.

Have you checked the Knowledge Base article?

For additional information about downloading .exe files with Internet Explorer, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q140991 Internet Explorer Opens .exe Files Instead of Downloading Them

What happens if you right-click and choose Save Target As...?

Thanks for your input most appreciated
Have checked and confirmed that the registry key has the following information:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
@="exefile"
Under folder options/file types the winzip the "confirm open after download" box is checked.

As stated in my original post the article Q140991 refers to IE4.
Confirm that I can right click and 'save target as' but this is no good if I wish to download from say CNET or ZDNet.

Anyone any other ideas

I emailed Microsoft support with the problem and have heard nothing so far except for them to ask me the product identification number.

The problem only exists when the download site uses two pages for the download. The first redirects you to the second page that is supposed to start the download, ie ZDnet and CNet. I don't have the same problem using other sites such as Gateway, MicroSoft and others that do not redirect your browser.

epruittjr,

Are you running IE5.5 SP2 or higher? For more info on any of the articles, In Internet Explorer, go to Help>Online Support, choose the Microsoft Knowledge Base, then check the box that says specify an article ID number, then paste the article numbers below into the search box.

Belfield,
try this:

Delete your Temporary Internet Files and clear your History and Cookies

1. Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools.
2. Click on Internet Options.
3. Click on Delete Files. Check the Delete Offline Content box and click OK. Click Clear History and click Yes. Click the Delete Cookies button.

Delete the CV3 Class file. This will force the Windows Update site to download a fresh copy of this file.

1. Close Internet Explorer.
2. Right Mouse click on the Start button and select Explore with the Left Mouse button.
3. Double click on the Downloaded Program Files folder.
4. Right click on the file 'CV3 Class' and remove this file.

Now perform these steps to delete the Windows Update site controls. This will cause the Windows Update site to download new ones.

1. Click on Start/Run.
2. Type "regsvr32 wuv3is.dll /u" without the quotes.
3. Click OK.
4. Click on Start/Find/Files or Folders.
5. Type wuv3is.dll in the Named box.
6. Make sure that the drive letter that contains your Windows folder is in the Look in box.
7. Click on Find Now.
8. In the results window that shows the location of this file, right click on the filename and delete it.

Also, delete all the files within the WindowsUpdate folder except for the wuhistv3.log. These files are not needed by your system. Doing this will not delete the updates you have already installed.

1. Right click on the Start button and click on Explorer with the left mouse button.
2. Locate the Folder 'WindowsUpdate' It will be a subfolder under Program Files.
3. Highlight the wuhistv3.log file within this folder, click on Edit, click on Invert Selection and click on Delete. Everything in this folder with the exception of wuhistv3.log should be deleted.

Or try these command from the Run box:
regsvr32.exe shdocvw.dll
regsvr32.exe mshtml.dll
regsvr32.exe shdoc401.dll
regsvr32.exe webvw.dll
regsvr32.exe browseui.dll

Then shutdown and restart your computer.

Sorry about the delay in replying - been away
Re. your reply
Deleted tempory Internet files, history, and cookies.
Could not find 'CV3 Class' file in Downloaded Program Files folder. Did a search - no luck.
When TYPED 'REGSVR32 WUV3IS.DLL/U' in run box got
error 0x00000485.
Deleted every thing in Windows update folder except 'wuhistv3. log' file and actioned the commands you suggested from the run box.
Shutdown and restarted computer.
Fault still there.

I had to reformat my hard drive and restore the original configuration because of bad sectors. Afterwards I downloaded and installed IE6 again and it works perfect now. Don't know whether Microsoft fixed a bug or the websites offering the downloads changed something on their end.

REGSVR32 WUV3IS.DLL/U

you forgot the space:
REGSVR32 WUV3IS.DLL /U

reghakr

Re. your mail I tried 'REGSVR32 WUV3IS.DLL /U' in run box including the space but still got error 0x00000485.
Thanks so much for your help but I think I am going to have to reformat my hard drive.
Have'nt done this before. Any tips on saving my IE favourites, Outlook Express folders etc.

Best regards

Here's a site with a great deal of good information:

Save these files from Outlook Express:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{YOUR IDENTITY NUMBER}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Outbox.dbx
cleanup.log
Deleted Items.dbx
Drafts.dbx
Folders.dbx
Inbox.dbx
Offline.dbx
Pop3uidl.dbx
Sent Items.dbx

and any newsgroups you may have subscribed to.

I am having same problem. I have gone through this posting and do not see a solution to the problem.
********************************************************
This is my situation... (similar to the person above)
When I try downloading .EXE files, instead of giving me
the dialog box-- Open file or Save to Disk... I get a
blank window with a little colored box in the upper left
hand corner. I have tried reinstalling IE, uninstalling &
reinstalling IE 5.5, SvcePk 2, installing IE6,
reinstalling Service Pack 6a (for NT Workstation).

Still.. same problem. Can't download files. Usually I
get around it by right-clicking and doing Save Target
As...that works. But I can't do that when the download
link redirects to another location, I must go to another
machine to perform the download. I don't see any settings
that would do this. Anyone have any ideas about this?
Thanks, Jack
.

I have the fix for this problem.

To resolve this issue, delete the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
(junk left behind by another application)

This worked perfectly. No more problem.
