Ok....
Windows Update had new drivers for my Hercules Game Theatre sound card so I went to install them....
From when I installed them sound card didn't work anymore....
So I went to install the old drivers and when I ran the install it said you can't be connected to the internet while the drivers are installing....
So I disabled Local Area Connection installed the drivers, enabled LAC again and restarted....
Well then the s**t hit the fan....

LAC was there and had the proper address, the sound card wasn't working, and IE and programs like MSN Messenger and Weatherbug brought up Dial-Up networking dialog....
Messed around with drivers some more and I got the sound card working again....

The network problem is still there....Firefox and Eudora work just fine without any problems, but Internet Explorer and Weatherbug and MSNM want to dial a connection and don't detect the existing one....if I connect to my work VPN it works just fine.....

I tried to use Winsock Fix and it didn't work...

Please help....appreciated very much!

Double check you internet option under connections to verify that dialup is check for "never dial a connection" and in LAN settings auto is check off.

You might also have to go into IE->Tools->Options->Connections->Setup and reset your connections. Also double check your LAN settings from the same location.

Then reboot your pc. Are you using a static IP or DHCP to get the IP address? Might be a good idea to shut down your modem for a minute or so, turn it back on, and reboot your pc.

IF you get your IP thru DHCP, from the command line type: ipconfig /release then press enter then type ipconfig /renew. This will refresh your IP address. Sometimes I have to do this because my ISP gets relly messed up and it fixes things.

Also clean out your internet files, cookies, and offline files thru IE.

Ok....this more or less solves the problem.

It was on "Always dial my default connection"

However, every time I close and reopen IE it goes back to Always and not Never....

I cannot figure out why that is happening....

Open the COntrol panel add change the internet options there and see if they stick.

Nah...still keeps on doing it....

I would download, install, and run spy bot search and destroy to see it there is a dialer. This program searches for trojans and malware.
As for the drivers you could have looked in the device manager and rolled back the drivers for the devices the newer drivers replaced.

htmlman...ran both spybot and lavasoft....just tracking cookies....

yeah I rolled back the driver....
basically that's the only problem...it just keeps selecting that method (always dial my default connection) otherwise everything would work alright...

It's getting weirder and weirder...

It finally accepted "Never dial a connection" after restart....

NOW....my IE is UBER-slow (loading the pages that is, it opens up in a second), Firefox works fine but it takes 15-20 seconds to open up, and Eudora gives "host is unreachable" error for all 7 of my pop3 e-mails....

Good god what is going on....I think a reinstall is about the only thing that will save me at this point...

It may be time to run a virus checker, with all the latest updates. This is a first place to start.
