I don't know whether you would call this a virus as such but I didn't know which forum to ask in.

My Internet Explorer 6 right click mouse button menu (the cut, copy, paste menu) now has an unwanted item in it. I have done a complete search in the registry and did find an entry in the MenuExt section of internet explorer for the menu item. I removed this thinking that that was that. But the menu item was still there. I then did a complete search on my hard drive for any file name that may contain a word from the menu item. I thought maybe there was a shortcut. There were a few so I deleted those and emptied my recycle bin. But the menu item is still there.

Can anyone think of anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance.

I don't really want to use a software package I know nothing about... but if noone else has any other suggestions, I may have to.

smah is right - spybot is a good tool plus it is free. I have been using it and adaware for sometime. Since you haven't told us what is in the menu it is hard to suggest anything else.

Does it matter what was in the menu...? It was a link to a site which I do not want to go to.

Don't refuse to download spyware removal software.
Spybot is perfectly safe ,
how did that context entrys get there in the first place?

Look in
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt

smah,

"We knew that just from the way you described it."... my comment ... "Does it matter what was in the menu...? It was a link to a site which I do not want to go to. " was for glacierxx

SYAR2003,
I did look in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt and it was in there and I did delete the entry in the registry, but the menu item is still in the menu.

I guess I will have to start using SpyBot. I didn't think that Scripting languages had the ability to write to the registry.

Well there might be a stinker trojan or more
that loads at each start.
Writing this in at every boot.
I have written some suggestions in several posts
how to protect yourself with three different
programs .
Only AV just isn't good enough anymore .

Yes, it can help to know what is in the menu. If I know what it is, then I can figure out who it came from and possibly recommend an alternative fix that might be agreeable with you.

Hope you deleted the key ( left regedit window)
not just the dword .

My guess is one of the many porn related browser modifications, most of which Spybot should be able to fix with manual modification of the registry.

well.. that's weird... it's gone now... must have taken a few reboots... if you really must know which site (I'm shy ok!) it was Hardcore Movies. You guys have convinced me.. I am now off to get spybot..

Thanks for all of your help guys... really appreciate it.
