Run through this first. faq608-4650

If you still need to post a log, do so in forum760, NOT here.

I tried google but found it too invasive.

I now use "pop this".

It runs completely silent and works great.

Jim, Just curious - if you choose not to send PageRank info, what's invasive about the Google toolbar?

The future is already here - it's just not widely distributed yet...

carr, (and several others) have done a rant about the Google toolbar.

I hope they respond.

My own view is that it is a very cool thing. I do not use the pop-up blocker feature, as I have been happy with my third-party tool (Meaya Software Pop-up Blocker for the curious).

If by chance you are using XP as a client, there are pop-up and SPAM features in Service Pack #2; for the brave you can test this yourself for free, but please see my notes as to possible negative things in testing this Beta release: thread779-803880

Finally, there will soon be a Microsoft Toolbar that at the moment at least offers this feature. I promise to say more when I can.

I think the Google toolbar pop-up blocker is the best thing since sliced bread. (IMHO)

Jim,

I have the Google toolbar running on my son and my daughter's computers, and as far as I can see it works quite well.

There are some concerns by others, and I hope perhaps this thread will bring out of the closet the Google Toolbar Haters so that the issue can be reviewed.

It works very well on my kids machines. And they are both pretty serious Internet users.

I too find myself puzzled why the rant against the Google toolbar.

I just use a browser (SlimBrowser) that has pop-up blocking as part of the tabbed browser.

My rant against the Google toolbar is quite dated.
I've softened on the issue somewhat...I no longer encourage users to remove it, but still don't/won't use the product myself.
Whether or not the toolbar is a spyware has been tossed about for a good while and there's a lot of dialogue on both sides out there. Granted, it's an "opt-in" spyware, but so are Gator, etc.

Popup stoppers worked for me for awhile until recently. I'm getting successful popups as many as I'm getting them blocked. What is causing this? I've tried MSN toolbar, Google toolbar, Free Surfer, 12 ghosts, and others. They do work but something has managed to get through like 'undertonenetworks.com'. Any suggestions?

Try disabling Windows Messaging:
Also, download SpyBot ( and after scanning/cleaning your pc, enable it's IMMUNIZE function.
Finally, you might try loading your HOSTS file:

All of these are simply measures that build a collectively stronger defense. There is NO foolproof avenue out there, unfortunately (some say that alternative browsers, i.e. mozilla, opera, etc. do the trick, but...). The web is getting progressively more hazardous, as more and more "businesses" discover that adwares/malwares can bring them something they need.

Tired of waiting for an answer? Try asking better questions. See: faq222-2244

There is an excellent site profiling the evil overlord that is google.

If ever you have wondered just how independent Google was about search results etc, then this is the site for you.

I hope this helps to clear up any confusion
