One computer configured with same S/W and H/W as others will no longer connect to internet. Tried static IP and DHCP. No problems with the LAN. Default Gateway, IP address's all correctly set. Any ideas what to try next.
Running Win98SE.

How does (should) it connect? (eg, router, ICS)

What are the IE connection settings? Any proxy in there? What about a HOSTS file? Any junk in there? Does TCP\IP have a DNS server setting? And is it correct?

Have tried to "repair" IE?

Connects via a router, uses a LAN connection and no proxy setting is configured, it gets it DNS settings from DHCP, the same as the other machines and they work. Unable to ping anything over the net. We'll check the host file, also how do you repair IE (reinstall ?) Cheers

If you can not ping anything than your problem is not IE. It is a net connection problem. Does it get a real IP, or is it just using an old one it had from before. Can you release\renew and get a new one? Can you ping the router? YOu say thelan is working, yet you can't ping anything? How can that be? IPX network?

I can ping other computers on the network, but not on the internet i.e. google, bbc etc. Tried with static IP and DHCP addresses. Release/Renew works and we get a new IP. We've done a Tracert and it gets as far as the router but no further, although other machines have no problem.

Cheers

Does the router have an allowed computer list by mac address? That is the only thing I can think of, if you get a new IP.

HI STEEVY,

Is your browser IE5.5? If so, I may have a solution for you. Been there, done that.
