IE has a blank screen

IE in my laptop has a blank screen- no information at all. I have run adaware & virus check on the computer. This IE blank screen affects several non- browser programs including System Restore,Help screens, messenger services. Appreciate any help in fixing this vexing problem.
Laptop is win XP,1 ghz,256 mb, Pentium 3 Toshiba

As a first step, try opening a command prompt and type sfc /scannnow Be sure to have your xp cd handy.

I tried to run sfc / scannow. The dos screen appears for a fraction of a second & disappears. Pls advise

Go to start > programs > accesories > msdos prompt
then enter sfc/scannow
