Problem:
After Internet connection is established and a web page is up i.e. msn.com, you can surf for about 5 minutes or so. When I use a search engine, I can see the results and go to them for 2 or three minutes. After that, I get "This page cannot be viewed etc, "error message. For a while the back button will function but eventually I get the same error message no matter what I do. I can ping from a DOS Promt with no problem but can't see the web page. If I reboot the system,IE functions normally but degrades within 3 or 4 minutes. It is a predictable problem, not random.

Solutions tried:
3 Different Modems
Checked the TCP/IP Protocols
Reinstalled the Dial up Connection
Removed and Reinstalled Internet Explorer
Reinstalled Windows XP (Royal Pain )

Help going nuts.

Is your ISP timing you out? AOL used to love to do that although a couple of minutes sounds too short.

Hi Kiddpete
I dont think the ISP is timing out. Other computers are working fine. If the ISP timed out would I still be able to Ping?

. be certain you have cleaned your Temporary Internet Files cache. You can use IE, Tools, Internet Options, and clear the caches using the selections.

. It would be worthwhile to do a repair of your Winsock service stack: faq779-4625

I'm having the same problem. Typing fast b/c I've got about 7 minutes. Did you resolve it?

Hi! And a Happy Holiday Season to all....

I have the same problem - only I can operate just fine for about 2 hours. Then, all of a sudden, the connection is broken. One of the other computers on the network works just fine and never gets cut off. The computer that works all the time runs Windows 2000 Professional, and the one that has the "timeout" problem is running Windows XP Professional. I too, have to reboot the system to get back on line. I have a DSL connection, and the timeout computer connects to the ISP through a router connected to the W2K machine.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Bill

Seasons greetings to all
Thanks for all of the responses
I finally fixed the problem after trying all of your suggestions to no avail.
The original OS on the computer in question was WIN 98 with an old ISA Modem. The Modem files were apparently corrupted, and even though other modems were installed, they somehow affected the new modems operation. Once I deleted all references to the old modem in the registry and reinstalled the new modem and drivers, all problems went away. Again, thanks for all of your help
