Hi all,

I have a very serious problem below:

The configuration: Windows 2000 Terminal Server SP3 running Citrix Metaframe 1.8, IE 6.0. Don't worry if you don't know Termnial server or Citrix because I'm sure your suggestions will still apply...

The background: W2K server was updated with service pack 3. Also installed AdAware and removed all the entries in the registry, cookies and files it found (including an Alexa entry). Rebooted the server.

The Problem: Now about 4 of our users cannot use IE... When they start it they get the new and improved W2K error of "This program has caused an error ... Send Report / Don't Send a report" and it closes. As far as I know, there is no service pack on IE (it would say in help>about, right?). I tried reapplying W2K Service Pack 3 last night but to no avail.

The Solution: ...

Should I try applying Service Pack 1 for IE 6?
or
Do you know of any ways to "Repair IE 6" ?
or
Any other suggestions???

Thanks in advance!!!

i had the biggest problems because of spyware, most times spywares tie themselves to IE, i lost my net connection when removing them, and the only way was to restore the Quarantine-files and go throw them by one, or format my pc! i suggest you restore the files and go throw them one by one.

Else SP4 is out, get the full installation file here: i am sure that will fix it cause it did for me (found out late):)

Ok, I will try the new SP, but I'm not placing any bets that it will work...

Quarantined files cannot be restored as they were deleted...

Lastly, do you have any idea how to "repair" an install of IE6?? I think I've heard of people doing this before. Maybe that will do the trick...?

Repair IE in Win2K by going to Start > Run > msinfo32.exe
In the Microsoft System Information window, go to Tools, Repair Internet Explorer.

Sounds simple but it didn't work: I typed msinfo32 in the Run box. Sure enough the System Information box pops up... BUT when I click the Tools menu up top, only the following menu selctions are available:

>Windows>
Disk Cleanup
Dr Watson
DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Hardware Wizard
Network Connections
Backup
File Signature Verification Utility
Update Wizard Uninistall
Windows Report Tool

Did I miss something? More suggestions?

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Highlight IE, hit Add/Remove. Repair will be a choice of three on the opitons menu.

If that fails to materialize, as it may - that is, you might not see IE on the program list, you can kick it off from a command prompt using this command:

Start > Run

type in rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Unfortunately I don't see IE listed... I went to Add/Remove Programs and the only thing that resembles IE is:

Internet Explorer Q818529

Hitting the "Change/Remove" button only confirms to uninstall it... Any more suggestions?

Sorry, the command prompt method came as I was typing my other reply. I will try you suggestion tonight after busniness hours and let you know how it goes... Thanks for the suggestions...

carrr,

Your suggestion worked like a charm =) All users are now succuessfully surfing again, happy as a clam, and once again my neck has been saved!!

Thanks a million...

Carr-
Can you please help with that command line? It is very long and typing it in did not work for me. I am having major issues trying to update windows from sp3 to sp4. It is telling me that I need ie 6, sp1, however, in ie the current version is 6.0.2800.1106, with Q818529 installed. Here is the EXACT sp4 install error that I get: c:\program files\outlook express\wabmig.exe is open or in use by another app. Close all apps and Retry. This happens even with NOTHING open and even in safe mode.

I am sooo stuck here.
Any help would be appreciated

When looking at the info found under "About Internet Explorer" on the Help drop-down, do you see "SP1" after "Update Versions"?
