I have a clean install of xpp with the latest(?) versions of IE and OE.

I am on the modem, yuk, hopefully temporarily, and when I go to any page, the speed is really slow the first couple of seconds then it finishes the page. It does this even when my wireless is supposedly working.

Is there some setting I need to change? I have 512MB of RAM, 2 hdds, both with vm set to 1.5 times ram. Can I or should I make them larger?

Any helps will be appreciated.

What do u mean it does this when ur wireless is working?

MTU?

XP should have defaulted to the right MTU.
But your AP/router may have a setting by default of 1500 or possibly 1492.

Set the router/AP MTU to 576, and then run a Tweak Test:

U can also download an application called Dr.TCP with which you can set the MTU on ur host adapter.

All right you gurus, I'm not familiar with your abbrevs.

What is MTU?

I have a modem, yuk, and a wireless internet service. The wireless has been giving me and the techs a great deal of trouble too. There are many times the wireless won't work either, but when it does, it too starts a page real slow the finishes quicker.

There have been times when nothing could slow the wireless down, but when it does it stops dead in its track.

I am having trouble visualizing how the internet service can now be doing the same thing on both modem and lan. It seems to me there is some setting(?) on the pc screwing up the services.

Any help will be really appreciated.

See if there is any help here.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing >
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

Have a look in your Windows/ downloaded program files/ Folder and see what is in there.
See if you have any likely spyware activex object ('Tracker Class').

Re: Repair IE 6

The ability to Repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since Windows 98 and IE4. However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

You will need to have your XP CD available. You will need to redo any IE Updates too.

I learned using SFC /Scannow at the command prompt will help in repairing IE.

Try disabling any unrequired services that are running in background.

Spybot

Ad-aware

Will check your computer for spyware and adware.

I have done all of the spybot, adaware, etc.

System is really slow. Memory(?) seems to be hanging every 3-5 seconds and mouse won't work then either. hdd issue?

I checked the add/remove folder and there are about 20 MS updates in there. This alone slows down the pc.

Any help in locating a way to increase speed and not hang will be greatly appreciated. I sure don't want to start over and reformat/install again.

Also, file/print sharing, if on one computer, should this be unchecked? I have another pc that goes thru this one to print.

Do you have the automatic update running (it will be a little globe in the bottom right hand corner of your toolbar). I have found that when using a modem the autoupdate feature will automatically restart where it left off when you start your computer back up. This will cause all of the problems that you are having. Either stop the auto update from running or let it do it's thing (it will take a while).

Are you running Norton Antivirus. I've had problems with NAV v2004. You may need to disable *.js file scanning. It cut my ie window load time by 70%.

Auto update is off. ".js" files are excluded from running.

I cannot download SP1a because I am on a modem and it will take over 3 hours to run. I am hoping the "networking" SP1a will cover what I need as the ISP guy is going to download and put on a CD to use.

I have removed a bunch of programs, cache manager, etc, but the problem persists.

Thanks for all your helps. If I get this pc working like it should again I will post. I do not know what to try until the SP1a issue is tried.

Try setting NAV to using "SmartScan" and remove JS files there also. That is what I had to do even after the updated NAV..

Thanks MechMan, I will try this.

O probably won't get SP1a until Monday if I'm lucky. Until then I can't say what happens, unless of course, this NAV setting does the trick. Either way I'll post.

Update: changing NAV did not seem todo anything.

I will post after SP1a.

No more help is needed on this issue.

Thanks

Just a quick update. On linney's (above) info for the thread "IE takes forever" I did what Carr input for deleting the key in the registry. That helped quite a bit, but still hangs once in awhile.

I hope this helps others.
