When I try and execute an application (via a .exe file), from within Internet Explorer, a window pops up indicating that I have chosen to download that executeable. The pop-up asks whether I want to run this program or save it to disk? If I choose the "run" option, it runs the application successfully.

In other words, if I specify, C:\xxxxx.exe, in the URL, it brings up this "File Download" screen. It does this for all executables I put in there. The "Always ask before opening this type of file", check box is selected and grayed out, so that I can't change it.

Is there some Internet Explorer option that can be set, so that it doesn't pop up this File Download screen, and would instead just execute the application (xxxxx.exe). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Unter IE go to TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS. Then go to ADVANCED. Scroll down and under BROWSING mak sure the "REUSE WINDOWS FOR LAUNCHING SHORTCUTS" is checked. Let me know if this helps. I think it should solve the problem you are having.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I tried it and it did not resolve the problem. I still get the 'File Download" screen. By the way, I am using IE 5.5.

I am very sure you cannot disable this screen for security reasons. If you could disable this screen than anyone could force an executable to run on your system, which would be pretty bad.

Ackka is right in that it is a very risky thing to do, and I'm not sure why you want to, but there is a way to run local exe files without the prompt.

You can create an html page with frames and use the iframe tag to point to any subdirectory on your hard disk you want. It would produce a window of that directory and you can double-click any exe file it it.

This may be more work than you want to do, but if you want details, let me know.

it would be risky for exe files. All I want is for shoutcasr pls files to automaticly open up. I know it can be altered since my friends machine does it just file without asking. my always ask brfore opening this type of file box is grey I suspect the outlook attachment security update!

This is a security issue, what you have to do is go into tools->internet options and the security tab. In here select a custom level, a window will pop up and dont change anything except the option about three quaters down the window called 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME', check the box to 'enable', (its set to 'prompt' as default).
This should allow you to run the files without the prompt.
Here is a pic of the window with the box to check...

Maybe you could help me!!! I'm tring to launch MS-Access from a web page. NS4.7 gives the dialoge box you mention. When I answer run from current location, my access application starts on the intranet. But with IE5.5, the same answer, I think starts access but it is in the background or it's not visable or has some other problem. A Javescript,VBscript or an IE fix would be helpful. Thank You

dkloehn,

Open Windows explorer, go to View>FolderOptions, click the file Types tab, scroll till you find the .zip extension, click the Edit button, then make sure "Confirm open after download" is checked. I know, just give it a try.

then check the registry:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
make sure Content Type=application/x-msdownload
