Hi all,
Im trying to help out a friend with an annoying problem!

He is running Windows XP with IE6.

Previously another friend decided to 'help' and install a pop up stopper and god knows what other spyware! After doing this my friends computer started behaving badly. The biggest issue being the following:

When clicking a link on a website which would normally open a new browser window, he is now receiving the following error message 'javascript :popUp('filename.jpg')', obviously the filename is different depending on the site visited.

Now what I have done is installed Adaware on his system, this found a heap of bad stuff on his computer, all of it has now been removed. I had him Restore IE default in the Advanced tab of internet options, also Clear History, Delete files and Delete cookies from IE. Exit IE and re-open, but still the same issue.

I am pulling my hair out on this one because I really want to help get this annoying problem fixed!

I am going to install some AV software tomorrow. But I would also some some ideas from anyone who might be able to help.

Thanks in advance, and thankyou for reading my post!

Sounds like you may also want to install a spy cop.
Adaware is good, but one spyware application is unfortunately not enough. Get Spybot (free) or some other free version thereof, and have is scan everything. You will probably be surprised.
Also, think of changing browsers.
Mozilla (v1.6) works fine for almost everything - except, curiously, Windows Update. With Mozilla, you can configure a popup blocker, a cookie blocker and a Java blocker.
Been using it for two months now, and spyware and adware are history to me.

Pascal.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfrotunately he wont use anything but IE for browsing. I will keep on searching for an answer!

Anyone have any ideas?

Do steps #2-#4 in faq608-4650
Then control panel, Add/Remove Programs, and remove any obvious pop-up blocker.

Finally, under IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, uncheck 'Display a notification on any script error' and check 'Disable script debugging.'
