Hi All,

One of the people that i work with is having an issue trying to Open documents with internet explorer, he can download the docuemnts ok, just cnat open them. When he tries to ope them, he gets this error message:

'c:\documents and settigns\username\local settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\V6G3BLSP\filename' could not be found, chec the spelling of the name and that the location exists.

The worst part is that this guy is a bit of an ass and doesn't seem to want to give me the time to VNC across the network onto his machine and check out what is going on, he just wants a solution - and preferably one that wont 'upset his schedule'.

So, when he takes the time to let me on his machine, it would need to be to solve this issue. Can anyone think of what it may be? Please can it be a quick and simple answer so i dont ahve to deal with this guy too much, cheers.

I do not have a good fix for you on this one. My suggestion, would be to have him change the download location and then attempt to "Manually" open the file.

However, I would like to suggest an alternative way to "Work around" such users. In my experience there are two ways to deal with these kinds of people...

1. Be brutal - I've seen this done where the IT personnel actually had users afraid of them, they walked towards a system and the user all but scrambled out of the way. Not really all that highly recommended but a little fear of the techies every now and again can be a good thing.

2. Documentation - This is my recommended method. Document everytime you talk to them, everytime you try to log onto their system to test a fix, or everytime they turn you down to do your work on their system. Document ever nuance (which should be done anyway, but ensure it is done painstakingly here). Then, after several similiar dealings with this individual take the calls, with supporting documentation, and any procedures/policies that exist to support your case to your direct report. With luck, they'll be able to sit down with the user and their manager to get a bit of perspective beat into them.

Sorry I don't have more information on your current problem beyond a guess.

I just talked the network administrator, he said the same thing, keep all emails and if he is still being a tool, well have words with the head of our department.

As for opening it manually, he can, he can download it to his machine and open it manually. But try explaining to him that that is what is happening whe he clicks on OPEN instead of SAVE. Apparently downloading the file is a waste of his time.

Anyway, he's off now until Tuesday so i have until then to think of a possible solution.

Thanks for your post aquias.
