it basically says that IE6 will install the same kind of serial checking that Windows XP is going to use in the future , even if your copy is legit (which I hope) , this would make your life very hard, as if you are the kind of person that continously upgrade, or maintain your hardware, everytime you change your hardware , you will have to re-authenicate your Windows, and wait for another CDkey or hardware key to start using windows again.

can anyone verify this? (the fact that IE6 will do this to win2k) Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

IE6 will not do that. It is just a web browser and for Microsoft to incorporate Serial checking into it is ludicrous. Windows 9x and Windows 2000 products come with a a predetermined key for the OS. Windows XP licensing will be different. It will come with a key that requires you to register your OS within 30 days or you cant use it. To incorporate this into IE6 would not have any meaning since a lot of users who own a copy of Windows (Any version) do not register them. (I am one of those people. I use a college edition of Pro and Server.). I looked in the registry of my Windows 2000 Server machine and found no such subkeys in my system (I have IE6 installed). Now that does not mean Microsoft is not going to attempt to get information from your machine on the OS version, computer name, and so forth to combat piracy. They have a right to protect their interests from being used by multiple users. So I would say you can breath a little easier on this topic. Its not like MS is going to lock out the OS you use. If it is pirated they may contact you about it. If you are still uneasy then don't update your OS.

Hope this Helps.

Could I also just bring your attention to the fact that you got that article form a LINUX LOVERS website, Thus voiding any claims against Microsoft. Linuxy people HATE Microsoft. That's the rule. In teling you this, along with many other confusing and downright WRONG facts about MS' products I they're kinda hoping you'll bugger off & get Linux!!!

I originally heard this information from a site that was dedicated to reviewing microsoft OS releases. (and I have seen similar things in the past, such as DX8 removing your monitor from system settings in win2k, and you were unable to set a refresh rate, til you downloaded a win2k fix) Karl Blessing aka kb244{fastHACK}

As with most of these claims in the past they are just that, CLAIMS. MS may be after $ and may not be the most loved company, but their products have 1 advantage over all others... EASE OF USE! Especially with people who do not know much about computers. Inorder to maintain a large market share they will incorperate the having to register the Windows XP and get away with it. Even Microsoft is not crazy enough to force users who use IE6 or DX8 in older Windows versions to register. The software was not built to force registration. But I suppose anything is possible.
(I had to throw that in just incase)

actually, playing with WinXP , it does show this method, they are looking at using Hardware as a way to make sure you dont move the OS to another machine.

this doesnt exactly breach their ease of use, because as long as you dont mess with your hardware, you can run it rather easily. Also ease of use, seemed to have turned into "Foolproof" when WinME came out, being one of the more annoying OS for people who know how to use computers, (it was restricting me from doing alot)

Sure they work on Ease of Use, but I've found certain things were made harder than they needed to be, if you dont do hardly anything, just check emails, browse the net, play a couple games, and never upgrade your hardware much, windows probally the easiest OS out there, despite the source of this information, I have actually seen this first hand on WinXP itself.

also I noticed the whole linux community (and other GPL related groups) going up and down , about microsoft technically declaring war on GPL and any other Open Source market , so this could be an attribute to why this informatino all the sudden just came up, speaking of "smart" I dont think it's smart of microsoft to start bad mouthing GPL and all other public liscene trying to put fear into the public, and to re-enforce people to turn back towards microsoft. Where do these ideas come from?

How much was MS charging you for IE6? Thought so.

Why go to the expense of adding product activation to free software? They aren't THAT dumb.

For that matter I've been through product activation on both WinXP and Office XP and it hasn't been a hassle, though they may be catering to beta testers now so they don't get a bad reputation - once these hit the street their phone might be busy with product reset requests.

But corporate versions of the products don't require PC by PC activation anyway, so we shouldn't listen to whining from corporate box-jockeys either.
