when i type a url starting with " instead of the whole " it'll take 20 to 40 seconds for my computer to figure out that there should be http:// in front of whatever website i'm trying to access. Typing http:// before the brings the page up right away. Leaving off the http:// always results in a delay even if I just visited the page. If I use a shortcut or pick from the history the page comes up right away (as if I typed the This was addressed in this thread:

However, no fix was proposed - just a work around of hitting ctrl-enter and typing a partial URL and letting IE fill in the and the .com suffix. This workaround does work, however I am seeking an understanding of the problem and perhaps a real fix for it.

Thanks,
-Andre

have you checked for spyware? something else may have installed itself into IE, so that it's engine gets checked first, instead of IE

I run Ad-Aware 6.0 regularly and it only finds and removes spyware cookies. No programs or IE spyware have been detected. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Take a look in your registry under this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL

You SHOULD see this setting:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
Default ="
With this subkey:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]

"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"=""mosaic"=""www"="
If missing, create the values listed above.....

[Though I shouldn't have to say it....if you're not familiar with editing your registry, seek help from someone who is...or, at very least, back up your registry before you go in and edit.]

Everything you list above are in the places that you indicated. There is an additional entry in the second subkey:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]

labled default with a blank value. This is in addition to the default prefix value that you list first. Any other thoughts on this are greatly appreciated.

Yea, I get the exact same problem when I don't type the http:// prefix. I too checked the registry and the recommended keys are there.

Well, this is not a fix, but a shortcut. Say you want to go to Instead of typing all of that out just type google then hit <ctrl><enter>. IE will add the and the .com for you.

I discovered today that if I do the following, the problem is corrected:

TOOLS
Internet Options
Programs TAB
Click the RESET WEB SETTINGS button

I have also noticed undesired, unrequested, and automatic display of pron web pages appearing when I move from web site to web site in IE 6. Therefore, I believe I must have something on my machine that is altering the browser. Once the alterations have been made, the problem of http:// not appearing crops up again. Using the technique above, clears the problem.

Norton can't seem to find any problems, Ad-aware doesn't report anything. Hmmmmmmmmm....

AdAware's not going to find much if it's not updated everytime you run it. Try SpyBot (which needs to be updated just the same) ....
Porn ad-ware is not that sophisticated, and should be rather easy to remove. If you can provide more info, we can probably get you sorted out....

Thanks for the SpyBot recommendation - 247 "issues" pointed out by the product beyond Ad-Aware.

i have this problem with my browser as well guys, but according to dean's recommendation, resetting the browser settings, it doesn't seem to work for my computer. ad-aware doesn't seem to turn up anything bad, but i will still try spybot, so perhaps in the meantime there could be someone out there with alternative fixes?

Have you verified that your registry settings are correct? (as I posted further up the thread...)

yeah, i checked the registry settings - does anyone think that either kazaa or the temporary internet files have anything to do with this?

Anything is possible - I do not have Kaza installed on the machine that is acting up. In fact, this machine was wiped and reloaded about 90 days ago.

Maybe it is the autocomplete funtions that are causing this?
Clear both the history and autocomplete lists and see.

Well, I'm still hosed in some way. Periodically when I fire up IE another page fires simultaneously taking me to 'bride.ru' so I can look at all the BEAUTIFUL Russian brides that I am missing.

You've got a hijacker, on that note. Run SpyBot or AdAware, or both, to clean it off...

I tried the reset web settings and all the original suggestions. Still no luck. I still run the new version for ad-aware frequently. I have no other spyware or unusual problems. Just the delay when I leave off the Any other thoughts?

I was frustrated with this very same issue. I found the solution on a different site.

Fix Annoying Autocomplete Delay
If your system is like mine, when you start to type an address into IE, your disk starts chugging, your CD starts to spin, and there's a delay before Autocomplete starts to work. This is because IE is searching for LOCAL paths. You can turn this off by going into Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, then unchecking Use inline AutoComplete in Windows Explorer.

This sounds like it won't affect IE, but it does. It forces IE to only look for URLs in its Autocomplete. Try it. You'll find your Autocomplete works much faster, and without all the disk fuss.
