I'm using IE 5.5 SP1 under Win ME, both fully updated.

This problem is small but very annoying. During almost every IE session my browsing slows down or comes to a halt, and I have to go to the following two screens and uncheck the check box:

Internet options > Tools > Connections> Lan Settings > Proxy server > Use a Proxy server

Internet options > Tools > Connections > Dialup settings Settings (for my ISP) > Use a Proxy server

Somehow the settings are defaulting to 'on', even when I've checked that they are 'off' before beginning to browse.

The only time I do use a proxy setting is when I dial into work, and I use a different dialup setting for that, with the connection mode set to 'Never dial a connection'.

Many thanks in advance.

Evan

I have the same problem. Certain times I will want to surf through a proxy and I turn the proxy on, so to speak, surf for awhile. Then when I turn the proxy off, it will no longer reconnect. I either have to do a "fix the version" or a complete reinstall of 5.5. I have win 2000 professional. Addtionally I will do a tracert and find no problems. For some reason IE loses tract of its connectibilty or something.

Sure would like to fix this annoying bug.

See I have the exact opposite problem. In my office we use a proxy server alaways. My problem is that when I check the "use a proxy server" to on, it will not save taht setting. So the customer has to manually set this if they want to get on the internet.

If any one has any suggestions anything will help

Thanks
Rick

I spent one whole evening trying correct this on ie5.
I fixed it by uninstalling the modem and isp account and reinstalling the same- it only takes ten minutes and is better than reinstalling ie or your operating sys.
This is with win2k.
