IE 5.5 open page in new window is always blank 1

We have a series of networked computers that run Win 98 with NT server. Recently IE 5.5 has started to open new windows with no content showing. I've searched internet for no answers. some pointers would be really appreciated, as unable to use our webmail service to compose new messages (opens in a new window which is blank)

I would start with examining other applications that might be interfering. Instead of assuming it's IE, take a hard long look at local network apps (firewall, AD blockers, etc).

Disable everthing from task manager except Explorer and try again. Still doesn't work? Then do all PC's on the network have the same problem, or is it just the Win98 ones? Try to establish a pattern of behavior common to a particular environment.

If it's affecting all PC's, I doubt the problem is locally on each PC. Instead, something on the network (possibly a port is being blocked or a proxy server is not configured properly).

Thank you for your ideas. I have fixed the problem, but have not found the cause yet - I will use your thoughts to check out some issues. The solution is to repair IE by start->programs->control panel->add/remove software->IE and internet tools->remove->repair and then reboot when prompted.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

then open IE and open something in a new window.. should fix it.

Hi Nick,

I agree with you on the above.
However users must make sure that they have the right version of the Oleaut32.dll file.
It is proved detrimental to end up with an Win XP oleaut32.dll in a Win98 or Me Operating System.
In that case IE will refuse to work until the proper Version belonging to Win 98 or Me is installed!!
A little useful note to remember!

Hi Nick

Wanted to let you know that I tried your fix - Windows XP - IE 6.0 - while trying to access webmail - page just says loading - unable to view e-mail - status shows done with error. This did not work - not sure if you had any other suggestions - I do not want to reload. PC is relatively clean with no malware - already reloaded IE 6.0 - checked active x settings this is fine - set advance settings to default. Still have problem.

Thanks for the tip. Registered every dll successfully with the exception of regsvr32 url.dll received the following message. "url.dll was loaded, but the dll register server entry point was not found. This file cannot be registered". Tried anyway - still having same issue - let me know your thoughts - I will research the error.

This is a secure logon issue, not necessarily a DLL registration issue.

Read your item as well; I don't actually have a problem with links either. Basically - while trying to check microsoft webmail - I can view the folder list on the left side but on the right side the page says loading - no mail items display. The status of the page shows done - with errors. The Internet explorer error is as follows;

Open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab. No the following depends on your IE version. You want to disable script debugging. In some versions you check to disable, others you check to disable. There should be in any case two possible checkmarked sites dealing with scripting and debugging.

Now click on the Security tab, Custom Level, and at bottom right, click on Java custom settings. Set as suitable.

Third, refresh your Java Virtual Machine. I know this should not matter for javascript, but do it anyway:

Finally, there have been enough instances of issues related to non-updated WSH provisioning. Download and apply the newer WSH to repair and sort matters:
