Identifying databases in EM 1

My organization has several SQL databases. I can establish connections to them through Enterprise Manager by typing in their IP addresses in the NEW box and completing the wizard, but then under my SQL Group I end up with several databases identified only by their IP addresses.

Is there a way I could get EM to display a name for these databases (Sales, Marketing, Production)? Or is there a better way for me to establish the connection so I end up with a name?

TIA Mike

Are you sure it's the databases showing up with IP addresses? When you register through Enterprise Manager, you are registering the SERVER, not the database(s). Then you expand on the server and that will show you the available database(s).

To show server names, you need to register the server with the name not the IP and that will only work if you have DNS set up to resolve the names.

Thanks SQLBill, you are of course correct, it is the server list I'm seeing.

Which answers my question, but does not solve my problem. The organization follows no naming convention for the servers, even where DNS is turned on the servers are named silly things like "Joes"....

Oh well. I'll just have to keep a list of which databases are on which IP address and look them up when I forget.

Thanks anyway

If your databases are specific per server (e.g. Sales DB's are nevever mixed with Marketing or Production on the same server, and the same for all 3 types), then you could numb the pain a bit by creating a SQL Server Group in EM and register each server in the appropriately named group.

That's a good idea. Pretty much that is how things are organized, so I'll give that a try. Thanks!
