Ideas for disaster recovery without an option of replication

I have to come up with a disaster recovery plan on Netware 6 for small businesses that might only have one server and no replication options available to them. I know that for Netware 4 and 5 there are disaster recovery options that come with backup software packages like Backup Exec and Brightstor Arcserve. Even ServerMagic might work for what I need but it doesn't support Netware 6 either.

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of a product that supported Netware 6 without having to a total re-install?

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Hello Susan -

There may be a few "one button" options for you . . . depending on your hardware. I personally have not tried one of these solutions, however they're becoming more and more popular.

This is a great link that describes the info/101 of the "one button" process -- It's for an HP Server, but I'm sure there are other hardware platform versions available.

Good Luck.

Hi,
I am currently using Brightstor ARCserv v9.0 to backup my NW 6.0 server. It is fully compatiable. If you already have the backup hardware this may be the way to go.

In my experience, backup solutions suck

Have you considered imaging the servers at a set interval & storing the images in a secure location?

Portlock ( a product called Storage Manager that is fully compatible with NetWare 6, NSS, etc. It is actually the product that Novell uses for their Digital Airlines demos

Although I haven't used it personally, I've heard that Portlock Storage Manager ( is good. If it does what it claims it can, I would say it's pretty nice software. Don't even try ServerMagic on NetWare 6. It's not supported and will trash your volumes.

I've used Portlock for a few clients and it's always worked well. It really comes in handy for Disaster Recovery and imaging servers just before applying a service pack or making major changes.

If they would only give the ability to dig into the archive (ala Ghost Explorer), I would even think about recommending it as a backup solution.

As far as Arcserve 9 and Netware 6 go... the disaster recovery option is not supposed for this configuration. It is in the works, according to my rep.

Thanks for the other suggestions guys. I will have to run them by my boss.[ponytails2]
