Hello everybody I have a question. I recently have used up all of my on board IDE slots and I need more. So I purchased one of the IDE cards that fit into your PCI slot. My problem is that upon installation my system began to run REALLY CRAPPY and bog down, it took forever to load my OS, my sound started skipping and my processor acted as if it was only 200 megahertz fast. I even tried a different brand and no luck, it still didn't help my system out. The drivers were up to date and installed correctly and the device even worked, it just jacked my computer all up performance wise. I really need help because I do need to use this card but not if this problem can't be fixed. Also I know that it has something to do with the card because I removed it and did a system restore and my computer was back to normal again.

By the way, my system is an Intel 2.53 gigahertz processor, with a gig of DDR Ram, and my motherboard is a P4 Titan model number:GA-8SR533

Would it help to attach an external drive to a USB 2 port?

Not really, because all of those are full too and eventually I will need to connect more than one device to the PCI IDE card. I believe that the card is the best way to go if I can get it to work. If not then I don't know.

Hola,

question: have you tried the IDE Card in a different PCI slot yet?

it could be that your interrupts are clashing...

most MoBos have a Slave slot (usually the very last one) that cause problems with interface cards (some not all)... had a similiar prob where my sound screwed up and PC hung every so often while I used a scsi card, until I removed the card and popped it into another Slot...

another rule of thumb, don't plug it into the PCI 1 slot, it is usually shared by the GFX card... and could cause probs...

Ben

PS - if I am wrong about this assumption then let me know...

I have tried that and it still doesn't seem to work. Thamks for the tip anyway. Anymore suggestions?

Remove all cards, except for your video card and the IDE controller card.....boot up, and configure the system. See if you still have performance degradation...if not, then add one card at a time.....maybe letting the IDE Controller get it's resources first will be advantageous?

Cheers!

Still didn't work, anymore suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Maybe going back to the USB solution that MOTONEX recommended would be best. All you would need to do is get a USB Hub so that you can attach multiple things to it.

Sounds like your motherboard doesn't want to control an add-in card.

Cheers!

The way you describe your prob you do have a resource/interrupt conflict... you might wanna try to set them manually...

or try another interface card, like a scsi or diff brand of IDE card (could be that the BIOS is old on the IDE card)...

besides this then the only option you do have is for you to get yourself a larger HD and port the stuff over to it...

The problem could have something to do with the chipsets/ drivers on the motherboard and chipsets/drivers on the add on IDE card. Slot placement and IRQs do come into play. The brand of add on card can make all the difference. We needed more IDE spaces for my son’s machine and all PCI slots were used up except one. I went looking at the local stores after surfing online checking prices and comparing products. I found through search that there were several more problems associated with some cards versus others. Some complaints, “the card won’t work at all.” Sound familiar? I decided to go with top brand instead of cheap and installed the Maxtor brand “Ultra ATA/133 PCI Adapter Card.” I am the computer “tech”, but my son did the install himself using the instructions and drivers supplied. The IDE was needed to power a Zip 100 drive- all is working well and the system runs faster then ever.

Sometimes it is cheaper and easier on the user and the system to just buy a second computer and network them together.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
