When your setting up a new pc does it matter if you plug in your harddrive to the IDE 1 or the IDE 2 plug in on the motherboard? And can you have both a harddrive and a cd-rom drive on the same ide cable?? please help

generally the hard drive is connected to the primary IDE or IDE 1 connector and cd roms, dvd rom and cdrw's connect to the secondary IDE or #2. While you may slave a cd-rom to a hard drive, the data transfer will be limited to the speed of the slowest drive or the cd-rom.So it is best to run them on seperate IDE. Hope this helps.

No it doesn't. Yes you can. But as nec says the normal way is hd on ide1 cd on ide2 both as masters.

Hi,

I have an HD I would like to set up as a slave on my new PC. I've never done this before but I do have one of those PCUpgrade books. Anything special I should be aware of? What happens to the OS on the second HD?

MPSoutine,
Just make sure the drive you are using as the slave has the jumper set to slave. The jumper should be on the back by the cable. Somewhere on the drive it will tell you which jumper setting sets it as the slave. If it is not on the drive you will most likely find it on the drive manufacturers web site. The OS files on the slave hard drive will still be there but they just wont be used since the computer will boot to the primary drive. You can delete them if you don't plan to boot to the slave ever again.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try.
