ID3 Tags and the v3 specification

Im not sure this is the right place to post this but I couldn't find anywhere more suitable!!!

I am trying to write a library that will extract ID3 tag data from mp3 files. I have written the routines for ID3v1 and ID3v2 but when I came to test the v2 code I found that both winamp and windows media player use v3. I have seen this version mentioned in a couple of forums, but I cannot find the specification for it. The site I downloaded the v2 specification from (

has no mention of a v3 specifiation.

Anyone know where I can find it?

That just deals with version 1. I hav especifications for version 1 and 2, but there seems to be a version 3 which winamp and windows media player use. I'm after the specification for version 3.

Thanks for the link anyway, it's helped me slim down my code for version 1 a bit.

the 3 in the "ID3 tag" does not represent a version.

There is no indication of a version 3, and probably what you are noticing is something non-standard.

I thought that but both Winamp and Media Player? I would have thought that they would use a set standard!
